이번 코타 여행은 2006년을 시작으로 네 번째다. 그 사이 흔히 말하는 이곳의 유명 섬(사피, 마누칸, 가야, 슬록 등)과 그리고 키나발루산(동남아 최고봉 4095m)도 올라가 봤다. 이곳의 또 다른 명소인 우림(雨林) 속에서 즐기는 노천(露天) 유황 온천을 포함 세계 곳곳의 노천 온천을 많이 가 봤지만 내가 지금껏 체험한 곳 중 가장 인상 깊은 곳은 남미 마추픽추의 깊은 계곡에 형성된 자연의 온천이고 두 번째는 이곳 키나발루 온천이다. 셋째라면 뉴질랜드 북섬의 온천 등인데 이들은 다 인공(人工)이 가미(加味)된 곳이었다.

코타키나발루 하면 역시 깨끗하고 아름다운 바다와 백사장 그리고 석양(夕陽)을 떠올린다. 바다와 백사장은 앞에 언급한 여러 섬에서 즐기고 석양 감상은 대개 코타 중심지에서 가까운 해안가에서 즐긴다. 워터프론트도 좋지만, 탄중아루 비치는 더 인기 있는 곳이다. 야시장과 더불어 많은 인파가 북적인다. 달리 말하면 이곳은 낮에는 수십 킬로나 되는 긴 해변에 뜨거운 햇살만 쏟아질 뿐 사람의 그림자도 없다.

나는 어제 낮에 혼자 뜨거운 햇볕을 무릅쓰고 숙소로부터 약 4km를 걸어서 탄중아루 비치에 갔다. 역시 듣던 대로였다. 먹고 마시고 사진을 찍는 등 황혼(黃昏)을 보러 온 즐거운 관광지 분위기와는 판이(判異)했다. 너무 뜨거워 오래 서 있을 수 없었다. 자리를 떠나기 전 다시 한번 긴 해변을 바라보니 조금 전만 해도 보이지 않았던 두 명의 수영복 차림의 사람이 보였다. 다가가 보니 젊은 서양인 여성들이었다.

내가 먼저 나는 아내와 함께 서울에서 온 여행자라고 밝히고 그들은 어디서 왔느냐고 물었다. 그들은 콜롬비아에서 온 직장 동료라고 했다. 의외였다. 왜냐면 그들은 아주 자연스럽게 영어를 마치 영어 원어민처럼 했기 때문이다. 듣고 보니 이들은 캐나다인들이었다. 이들은 영어 교사로 콜롬비아에 파견돼 2년간 봉사 활동을 마치고 귀국 길에 평소에 궁금했던 보르네오섬을 구경하고 쿠알라룸푸를 거쳐 방콕에서 일정을 마친 뒤 귀국한다고 했다.

나는 25년 전에 콜롬비아를 갔었는데 요즘의 그곳 환경은 어떠냐고 물었다. 이 친구들은 이구동성으로 베네수엘라의 난민들이 몰려 오는 등 경제 상황이 안 좋다고 했다. 이들은 특히 많은 베네수엘라 여성들이 고통을 받고 있다고 했다. 더 자세한 상황을 안 물어봐도 알 만했다. 더 이상 정치적 상황은 묻지 않았다. 대신 스페인 언어권인 그곳에서의 영어 교육은 어땠냐고 물었더니 한마디로 노 프라블럼이라고 했다. 생활영어를 가르쳤는데 그들에겐 매우 절실한 것이어서 학습 효과는 좋았다고. 그렇다. 비영어권 특히 후진국에서의 영어 소통력은 곧 그들의 생활 수단이 되기 때문이다.

이들 중 한 명이 내게 물었다. 내가 25년 전에 콜롬비아를 여행했다는 것이 궁금하다는 것. 이에 대한 나의 답을 들은 이들은 놀라는 표정을 지으며 어메이징을 연발했다. 내가 그들에게 한 말은 한반도에 6·25 남침으로 발발한 한국전쟁에 참전한 유엔 회원국에 관한 것이었다. 즉, 나는 6·25 전쟁 참전국 16개국 등 22개국을 직접 찾아가 감사의 뜻을 전한다는 나와의 약속을 실천한 것이라고 했다. 물론 캐나다도 포함한다고 했더니 이들은 다시 한번 어메이징을 외치더니 오히려 나보고 탱큐라고 했다. 이들은 대체로 내가 오히려 무안해할 만큼 역(逆)으로 고맙다고 한다. 이런 경험은 한두 번이 아니다.

기념사진을 찍고 싶다고 했더니 수영복 차림이라 곤란하단다. 그럼 멀리서 뒷모습을 찍겠다고 하니 OK였다. 혹시 오해를 할까 싶어 내가 사진을 찍는 이유를 설명했다. 이 친구들은 좋은 생각이라며 환하게 웃었다. 나는 특히 세계여행 중 만나는 사람들을 매우 소중히 생각하는 데 이를 오래 간직하기 위해선 사진을 찍어 둘 수밖에 없다고 했다. 사람의 기억은 시간과 함께 사라지는 법. 그러나 다행인 것은 사진을 보는 순간 까마득히 잊고 살았던 옛 추억이 생생히 떠올라 마치 세상을 다시 사는 기분이어서 너무나 좋다고 했다. 내 말을 듣던 한 친구가 대뜸 자기 폰으로 내 사진도 한 컷 찍었다. 흐뭇했다. 내가 그들의 이름을 잊어도 그들의 국적(國籍)을 잊지 못하듯이 그들도 마찬가지일 것이기 때문이다.

People met on my backpack172 - Two ladies from Colombia who met at Cota Beach

We have visited Kota four times, visited popular islands like Safi, Manukan, Gaya, and Slok, and the tallest peak in Southeast Asia, Kinabalu Mountain. We have visited open-air hot springs worldwide, including sulfur hot springs in the jungle. The most amazing location was the natural hot springs in Machu Picchu's deep valley. Kinabalu's hot springs ranked second, and the North Island of New Zealand's hot springs ranked third, all artificially created.

Kota Kinabalu is known for its clean water, white beaches, and beautiful sunsets. The coast near Kota's center is popular for watching sunsets. Tanjung Aru Beach is more popular than the shoreline, and the night market is bustling in the evening. During the day, with no people, the ten-kilometer-long beach offers only blazing sunlight.

I braved the blazing sun by walking 4 kilometers from my hotel to Tanjung Aru Beach yesterday. That's exactly what I heard. It was not like the mood of a lovely tourist location where people gathered to watch the sunset, dine, drink, and take photographs. I couldn't stand for long since it was so hot. Before I departed, I took another glance at the long beach and noticed two people in swimwear that I hadn't seen in a while ago. I found that they were young Western ladies.

I introduced myself from Seoul with my wife and inquired where they were from. They claimed to be Colombian coworkers. It was surprising. They talked English fluently, as if they were native speakers. They were, in fact, Canadians. They were assigned to Colombia as English teachers, where they worked as volunteers for two years before returning home via Borneo. They stated that they would go home via Bangkok after concluding their agenda in Kuala Lumpur.

I told them I've visited Colombia 25 years before. They told me the economic situation with Venezuelan migrants, particularly affecting Venezuelan women. I asked them about their English teaching in a Spanish speaking nation, and they said it was beneficial as non-English communication skills were essential for survival, especially in developing nations. I agreed that the learning effect was positive, as I had experienced the same issues in Colombia 25 years ago.

One of them was interested in my vacation to Colombia 25 years ago. They seemed astonished when they heard my response. What I told them was about the U. N member countries that took part in the Korean War, which erupted during N. Korea's invasion of S. Korea. In other words, I told them I kept my vow to personally visit countries that took part in the Korean War and show my appreciation to them. Of course, when I replied it covered Canada, they were again shocked and praised me. They often say thank you, which makes me feel very ashamed. This is something I've heard a lot.

I asked if I could take a commemorative photo with them, but they declined because they were dressed in bikinis. Then I told them it was fine if I took a photo of them from a distance. I explained why I was shooting photographs in case they misunderstood me. They thought it was an excellent concept. I appreciate people I meet on my travels throughout the world, and I stated I take photos to remember them for a long time. A person's memory fades with time. But, thankfully, when I look at the old images, I clearly recollect previous memories of my past existence and exclaim, "I feel so good as if I were living in the world again." One of them that listened to me took a photo of me with her phone. I was overjoyed. It's because we'll remember each other's nations even if we don't remember each other's names for a long time.
