People met on my backpacking178 - My shoes come to mind when I think about Taj Mahal.

Before arriving to Pattaya, as we checked out after concluding our itinerary in Camranchen, Bangkok, a young man with a large rucksack entered the hotel. As soon as he completed checking in, I spoke with him. I told him we were a pair of travelers from Seoul. He welcomed us even more and emphasized his closeness to us. As a result, Seoul has gained popularity nowadays. He was from North Carolina, USA. I told him I'd been there for ten days and went to Cherokee Indian Village. We drew near shortly.

He had previously finished a 30-day travel to Southeast Asia. He stated that he was now on his way to India. I was fascinated in the news that he was heading to India, so I skipped over his travels to Southeast Asia and immediately questioned him about his trip to India.

He stated that he was travelling to the Taj Mahal via Chennai and Bengaluru in southern India. I informed him I'd previously been there. He greeted and asked me. He wanted to know when I went there and what impressed me the most. He showed high interest and expectations for India.

As asked, I shared an amazing example from both domestic and international sources.

It was about how I unexpectedly stepped barefoot on the sidewalk one day in India.

In 1995, I ended my third 30-day backpacking trip in India. It was time to travel to the Taj Mahal via rail from Boudaya. Back then, rail travel in India was quite poor. But it was enjoyable enough. I got on well with the natives. We had a good time traveling on train despite our limited English skills. We went to bed at approximately 10 p.m.

My bed was a upper birth. Back then, individuals frequently slept with their shoes close to their heads. Naturally, local people followed likewise. Because somebody took their sneakers. However, it wasn't simple for me. I assumed nothing would happen, so I simply slept.

When I awoke in the morning, my shoes had already gone. I felt quite ashamed. Of course, throughout my 14-month backpacking travel to India, I witnessed several of my backpacker friends and locals have their shoes stolen. That was when I should have learnt my lesson.

Anyway, I should have exited the train and walked barefoot onto the street right immediately. I had no option. Every steps I took seemed weird. I hated the one who took my shoes. Actually, there were several barefoot persons on the sidewalk, but it might be one of them. Beggars or monks(Sadhu)? Obviously, I was not either.

Just in time, a Western traveler approached me from the opposite side, so I chatted with him.

  Me: Hi? How're you doing?
He: Hello, what's wrong? What is wrong?
Me: I am looking for a shoe store right now. My sneakers was stolen on the train last night.
He: Oh, my! One of my pals also had his shoes taken. They made you a truth seeker(Sadhu) anyway. You should appreciate them, hehe.
Me: That's true, haha... on the streets, people called me Monk, They made fun of me in such manner. Have you ever seen a shoe store around here?
He: Wait a minute. Yes. There's just one I know. Go straight down this path, and you'll notice one on your left. Good luck, Master.

I barely got a pair of inexpensive sneakers and went to the Taj Mahal, feeling ill. As soon as I bought an entry ticket and entered the Taj Mahal, I proceeded to the drinking fountain, removed my shoes, and cleaned my feet. I felt uneasy.

This odd image transformed my enthusiasm and expectation to see the Taj Mahal Cemetery Palace, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, into a terrible figure all at once.

In any event, this was the consequence of my negligence and laid-back attitude at the time. Suddenly, I strolled about like a faux monk with bare feet. This was still an awful recollection for me.

When he heard me out, he said, "I don't think there's such a thing happening in India today. But I'd like to make those interesting memories if I could." I think he'll make one unforgettable memory like me. Of course, it's possible in India.

  Thanks for reading.
