  어제는 숙소 로비에서 인도인을 만나 많은 얘기를 나눴다. 그는 30대 젊은이로 뉴델리에 살고 있으며 직장에서 일주일 휴가를 얻어 아내와 아들과 함께 태국 방콕을 거쳐 파타야로 왔다. 사실상 결혼 후 가족과 함께 하는 해외여행은 처음이란다. 그의 부인과 아들은 아직 방에서 나오지 않은 상태였다.
  
  나는 옆에 있던 아내를 그에게 소개하며 우리가 델리 등 인도 여행을 했던 얘기를 했다. 이 친구는 아내에게 먼저 묻기를 인도 여행은 맘에 들었느냐다. 아내는 다 좋았지만, 더위는 참기 어려웠다고 했다. 그는 고개를 저으며 충분히 이해한다는 표시를 했다(*인도인은 고개를 저으면 ‘예스’, 끄덕이면 ‘노’란 뜻임).
  
  내가 그에게 델리가 고향이냐고 물었다. 그는 고개를 끄덕이며 구자라트가 고향이란다. 구자라트는 나에게도 강한 이미지가 남아있는 곳 중 하나다. 내가 1997년 델리에서 뭄바이까지 2일 동안 기차와 버스를 번갈아 타면서 내려갈 때 잠깐 들렀던 곳 중 한 곳이기 때문이다. 구자라트가 내게 더 인상 깊게 남아있는 것은 내가 그곳을 다녀간 몇 년 후(2001) 바로 그곳에서 근 200년 만에 다시 엄습(掩襲)한 대지진이 있었고, 그때 발생한 수만 명의 인명 피해와 건물 붕괴 등 악몽의 현장을 TV 뉴스를 통해 봤기 때문이다.
  
  이 친구는 내 말을 듣고 난 뒤 무겁게 입을 열었다. 당시 대지진 발생 후 운 좋게 살아남은 가족들은 생계의 터전을 찾아 흘러 흘러 정착한 곳이 바로 델리였단다. 온 가족이 안 해 본 일이 없을 정도로 열심히 산 덕택에 자신은 대학도 마쳤고 좋은 직장도 구했다는, 말하자면 인도판 가슴 찡한 인생성공 스토리였다.
  
  그에게 내가 경험한 30년 전의 인도와 오늘날의 인도는 눈과 귀를 의심케 할 만큼 장족(長足)의 발전을 이뤘다고 했다. 내 말이 떨어지기 무섭게 그는 ‘모디’ 총리를 언급했다. 그가 아니었으면 어림없으며, 인도는 아직 옛날 그대로였을 거란다. 덧붙이기를 그는 이번 ‘모디’ 총리는 내리 3선에 성공할 것이 틀림없다고 했다. ‘모디’ 총리의 리더십에 대한 그의 지지는 확고해 보였다. 모디 총리가 국민의 절대적 신뢰를 받는 이유를 물었다.
  
  그는 마치 준비된 답을 말하듯 그침이 없었다. ‘모디’가 집권하자마자 ‘모디’ 정부가 강력히 추진한 것은 외자(外資) 유치였단다. 삼성과 현대 등 한국 기업도 포함된다고. ‘모디’ 정부는 그에 족하지 않고 작은 정부 실현으로 의료, 교육, 복지에 관한 정부 지출을 대폭 줄였단다. 외교력 또한 대단하다며 나에게 인도 태평양 시대를 아느냐고 했다. 그는 마치 그것도 ‘모디’가 있음으로 가능하다는 투였다. 그것의 원천 아이디어는 일본의 아베 총리에서 나왔다고 했더니 그는 말이 없었다.
  
  그가 한국의 삼성과 현대를 여러 번 언급하며 극찬을 하기게 나도 인도에 대한 부러움을 몇 개 언급했다. 첫째, 핵무기를 가졌다는 것. 둘째, 세계 최초로 달 남극에 탐사선을 안착시켰다는 것. 셋째, 영국 총리 리시 수낵과, 미국 부통령 카멀라 해리스, 역시 현재 미국 대통령 후보로 경선 중인 니키 헤일리 등 세계적 거물급 정치인을 배출했다는 것이라고 했다. 예상과 달리 무덤덤. 그게 뭐 대단한 것이냐는 표정. 내가 좀 무안할 정도. 사실 우린 한국계가 미국 의회에 진출하는 것만으로도 한국인 핏줄 운운하며 온 언론이 대서특필하는데.
  
  한편 역시 그도 신세대임을 실감케 한 대목은 다음의 대화에서다. 내가 실제로 지구가 둥글다는 걸 내 육안(肉眼)으로 직접 확인한 곳은 정작 하늘이 아니라 바다였다고 했다. 3박 4일 동안 콜카타에서 안다만섬(약 2500km)으로 갈 때였다. 배가 바다 한 가운데(뱅골만)를 항해하는 동안 하루 내내 그런 자연의 신비를 체험했다. 배의 갑판에 올라 천천히 360도 한 바퀴 빙 돌아봤다. 완벽한 원(圓)이었다. 우주의 한 가운데 있는 느낌이었다. 너무 신기해서 좌로 우로 여러 번 반복했다. 잊을 수 없는 값진 추억의 선물로 남아있다.
  
  이 친구는 신세대답게 내 말에 감동은커녕 왜 비행기로 가지 않고 그 느려빠진 배로 갔냐고 했다. 시간을 중시하는 실용주의자였다. 물론 그때도 비행기는 있었다. 그러나 나는 특별한 체험을 얻고자 고대의 노예선을 방불케 하는 배를 이용했다. 지금 생각해도 현명한 선택이었다. 30년 전의 얘기다. 암튼, 이 친구의 말과 태도에서도 내가 평소 느꼈던 인도 지식인들의 철저한 경제에 대한 인식과 자국(自國)에 대한 자부심이 머리에 가득 차 있음을 느꼈다.

  People met on my backpacking 180 - a young Indian who loves his leader, Modi
  
  I met an Indian in the hotel lobby yesterday and spoke with him for quite some time. He's in his 30s and resides in New Delhi. He took a week off from work and traveled to Pattaya with his wife and son via Bangkok, Thailand. In fact, it was his first abroad with his family since their marriage. He was waiting for his wife and son to exit the room.
  
  I introduced my wife next to me and explained our trip to India, particularly Delhi. "Did you like your trip to India?" he asked my wife. My wife stated, "Everything was good, but the heat was unbearable." He indicated that he understood completely by shaking his head (*Indians wave their heads side to side to indicate ‘yes’).
  
  I inquired whether Delhi was his hometown. He nodded and stated Gujarat was his hometown. Gujarat is one of the areas where I have a strong impression. It was one of the stops I made in 1997 while traveling from Delhi to Mumbai by rail and bus. Gujarat was more remarkable to me since I learned on TV news that a major earthquake hit there again approximately 200 years after, causing horrors such as damage to tens of thousands of people and building collapses.
  
  After hearing what I said, he opened his lips quietly. His family, who were fortunate to survive the earthquake at the time, found work and settled in Delhi. He said that through his hard work, he completed his university degree and landed a respectable job. It was just like an Indian version of a life success tale.
  
  I informed him that India had achieved significant development in the past 30 years. As soon as I finished speaking, he named Prime Minister Modi. He stated that all was owing to Modi. He also stated that Prime Minister Modi must succeed in his third term. His support for Prime Minister Modi's leadership appeared unwavering. I inquired as to why Prime Minister Modi has total public trust.
  
  He said that as soon as Modi took office, the Modi government vigorously emphasized attracting foreign investments. He mentioned that Korean firms like Samsung and Hyundai were also included. The Modi government dramatically lowered government spending on healthcare, education, and welfare by establishing a tiny government. He stated Modi had strong diplomatic strength and asked whether I was familiar with the Indo-Pacific era. He also maintained it was Modi's idea. I informed him that the initial concept originated from Japanese Prime Minister Abe, but he said nothing.
  
  I also expressed my envy for India when he cited Korea's Samsung and Hyundai multiple times. First, it possessed nuclear weapons. Second, it became the world's first country to place a probe on the lunar south pole. Third, it has produced world-class politicians such as British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US Vice President Kamala Harris, and Nikki Haley, who is presently competing for the US presidential nomination. Unexpectedly, he looked calm. It was evident that Indian and Korean sentiments were significantly different.
  
  Meanwhile, I understood he was a new generation. I informed him that it was the water, not the sky, that I first observed the earth's round shape. It happened while I was traveling to Andaman Island (about 2,500 kms) from Kolkata for four days and three nights. I got lost in nature's mysteries throughout the day as the ship sailed over the Indian Ocean. The earth formed a complete circle. It felt as if I was in the center of the universe. It is still a beautiful gift of everlasting memories for me.
  
  Instead of being moved by my words like a new generation, he asked me why I went on that slow boat instead of an airplane. Of course, there were planes back then. But I used a ship that resembled the cheapest slave ship to get a special experience. Even now, I think about it, it was one of the wisest choices I've ever made. Anyway, even his comments and attitudes, I could see he was thinking about Indian politics and national pride.
