  타고난 기질(氣質)이랄까 웬만한 운동(익스트림 스포츠 포함)은 다 해봤다고 자부하지만 못해 본 것도 한둘이 아니어서 그것을 현장에서 볼 땐 그냥 지나치지 못한다. 그중 하나가 딩기 요트다. 나는 오늘 파타야 해변에서 한국에서 온 남녀 젊은이 10여 명이 딩기 요트에 돛 설치를 하는 모습을 보고 궁금증을 몇 개 물었다.
  
  질문:요트는 언제 배웠으며, 자격증은 있는지 그리고 요트를 렌트하는데 얼마일지, 한국에도 부산 통영 강화도 등 요트를 즐길 수 있는 곳이 많은데 이곳 파타야까지 온 특별한 이유가 있는지 등.
  
  답:대학 때 동아리를 통해 배웠다. 자격증 소유. 요트는 한국에서 직접 가져왔다. 한국에선 겨울에 추워서 요트를 탈 수 없다.
  
  재질문:이렇게 큰 것을 어떻게 비행기에 실으며 탁송비는 얼마나 되나? 이곳에서 요트를 타는데 태국 당국의 특별한 허가나 규제는 없는가, 가령 해변에서 몇 킬로까지 나갈 수 있는가 등.
  
  답: 요트는 2개월 전에 해외 택배전문 업체에 부탁해 선박으로 보낸다. 태국 당국의 어떤 규제나 요트 항해 거리에 제한이 없다. 이 친구들은 묻지 않은 것도 말했다. 작년 겨울엔 인니 발리에서 그리고 내년엔 필리핀 보라카이로 갈 예정이란다. 이들에겐 국경의 개념이 없어 보였다. 우물 안 개구리가 아니었다. 멋져 보였다. 세계의 바다를 넘나드는 젊은이들이 많은 나라의 미래는 밝다.
  
  그 외 사소한 것을 더 물어 봤지만 이들은 아주 밝은 모습으로, 억센 억양으로 다 답했다. 혹시나 해서 물었는데 역시나였다. 부산이었다.
  
  세계 여행 중 특히 한국인들이 일인용 자전거와 이 인용 자건거 (칠레: 너무 기분이 좋아서 함께 식사도 함,) 그리고 오토바이와 자동차를 한국에서 가져와 멋지게 세계를 누비는 모습은 더러 봤지만, 요트까지 가지고 와서 즐기는 것은 처음 봤다.
  
  한국인들이 그 큰 골프채 가방을 끌고 공항을 누비는 모습을 처음 볼 땐 어색했지만 한편으로 대단한 한국인들이라 생각했듯이 이번에 처음 본 이 친구들도 마찬가지였다. 이런 당당하고 멋진 한국인들의 모습을 세계 곳곳에서 계속 볼 수 있었으면 좋겠다. 어느 날 갑자기 사라질 수도 있기에…베네수엘라처럼.

  People met on my backpacking 181 - Cool Korean guys Crossing the World's Seas
  
  My natural temperament? Anyway, I've tried practically every type of sport (even extreme sports). Of course, there are things I have never tried before. So when I see it on the spot, I can't let it pass. One of them is the dinghy yacht. I witnessed approximately ten young Korean guys fixing sails on dinghy yachts at Pattaya Beach today. I asked them a few questions.
  
  Q: When did you learn how to yacht? Do you have a license? How much is it to rent a yacht? There are many places to ride a yacht in Korea, so why did you come all the way to Pataya?
  
  A: We learned it through clubs when in college. We own certificates. Yachts were brought from Korea. In Korea, it's too cold to enjoy it in winter.
  
  Q: What is the shipping cost for delivering a yacht via plane? Is there no specific permission or limitation from the Thai government to sail here? How many kilometers can you sail on the beach? etc.
  
  A: We send out yachts via ship two months in advance by contacting an international courier business. The Thai government has no controls or restrictions on sailing distances. They kept saying, "We went to Bali, Indonesia, last winter. Next year, we're going to Boracay, Philippines." They had no concept of a border. They weren't frogs in a well. They seemed cool. A country with many young people traveling the world's oceans has a promising future.
  
  I requested for further information, but they all responded in very vivid and heavy accents. I guessed correctly. They were from Busan(Pusan).
  
  While backpacking throughout the world, I encountered some Koreans who were traveling alone by bicycle or tandem for two. Also, while I've seen some Koreans bring motorbikes and automobiles from home and tour the world, I've never seen them bring their own yachts from Korea before.
  
  When I first noticed Koreans carrying large bags of golf clubs around the airport, it seemed strange. The same was true for the yachts I spotted this time. But I hope I could see so many gorgeous Koreans all across the world again and again. Unfortunately, they may vanish unexpectedly one day. Just like Venezuela. Who knows?
