  태국은 어딜 가나 말 친구들이 많아서 좋다. 세계인들이 다 모이는 곳이기 때문이다. 특히 파타야에 오면 더욱 실감난다. 숙소에 있어도 그렇고 거리에 나와도 그렇고 해변에 나가면 더더욱 그렇다. 한마디로 부딪치는 게 외국인이다. 그냥 말을 걸면 대화가 시작된다. 짧게는 일이십 분, 길게는 한 시간도 짧다. 낯선 사람과도 대화에 익숙한 특히 서양인들이 그렇다.
  
  해변을 걷던 중 매우 드문 풍경이 눈에 들어왔다. 서양인 노인이 물가에 앉아 책을 읽는 모습이 아름답기까지 했다. 일단 근처에서 사진을 한 장 찍어놓고 망설였다. 뭔가 말을 붙여보고 싶은데 독서 삼매경에 빠진 듯하니 그럴 수도 없고, 그렇다고 그냥 지나치자니 뭔가 중요한 것을 놓치는 것 같고, 하여 예의를 갖춰 양해를 구한 뒤 말을 이었다. 주변엔 많은 서양인이 파라솔 아래서 나를 지켜보고 있었다.
  
  “실례지만 잠깐 얘기할 시간을 내주실 수 있을까요? 다름이 아니라 당신의 책 읽는 모습이 너무 아름다워 사진을 찍었습니다. 오늘날엔 매우 드문 풍경이니까요.”
  “네, 괜찮아요. 스마트폰 글을 읽는 것보다 종이 글 읽기가 더 쉽고 편해서입니다.”
  
  “나는 한국 서울에서 왔습니다만 어느 나라에서 오셨나요?”
  “아, 서울에서 오셨군요. 서울에 대해서 많이 들어 봤습니다. 나는 노르웨이서 왔습니다. 노르웨이를 와 보셨나요?”
  “물론입니다. 내가 노르웨이를 처음 간 것은 1993년 트론헤임을 거처 북단의 나르비크까지 간 것이고, 그 당시엔 나르비크까지 가면 마치 노르웨이의 최북단에 간 것 같았지요. 암튼, 그 뒤 1996년에는 오슬로와 베르겐을 중심으로 여행을 했고 2021년 1월엔 노르웨이 북단의 나르비크보다 더 위의 트롬쇠에 다녀 왔습니다.”
  
  “여행을 많이 하시는군요. 그런데 그 추운 트롬쇠를 1월에 갔다니 분명 오로라를 보러 간 것 같네요.”
  “그렇습니다. 그리고 운이 좋아 오로라를 봤어요. 사실 나보다는 아내가 더 좋아했습니다.” “동의합니다.”
  “무슨 의미지요?”
  “나도 그렇지만 대부분의 남자들은 다 그런 것 같다는 뜻입니다. 지금도 아내와 함께 여행을 하시나요?”
  “그렇습니다만 선생께서는요?”
  “지금은 혼자입니다. 함께 다닐 때가 좋았던 것 같아요. 그건 그렇고 베르겐에서는 무엇을 봤나요?”
  
  “유명한 곳은 다 봤지만, 가령 송네 피오르드 Songefjord, 플로엔 Floyen 산 정상에서 바라 본 베르겐의 경치, 브리겐의 유명한 목조 건물과 베르겐 요새 등. 그러나 뭐니뭐니 해도 베르겐 수산물 시장에서 연어를 구입해 숙소에서 직접 요리해서 실컷 먹은 것이 가장 재미있었던 기억으로 남아 있어요. 물론 연어 샌드위치와 새우 샌드위치도 아주 좋았구요.”
  
  “아하, 스뫼르브뢰 smorbrod를 말하는군요. 그런데 좀 우스운 얘기지만 연어는 노르웨이에서도 아주 비싸요. 그러니 수입을 하는 나라에서는 더 비쌀 겁니다. 한국은 어때요?”
  “물론 비싼 생선 중 하나입니다.”
  “노르웨이는 연어뿐 아니라 뭐든지 다 비싸요. 그래서 난 태국이 좋습니다. 특히 온종일 해변에 앉아 맛있는 과일도 먹고 바다를 즐긴다는 것은 노르웨이에선 꿈에 불과합니다.”
  
  특히 겨울에 파타야를 많이 찾는 서양인 중에 핀란드 스웨덴 덴마크 등 북구인들이 많은 것은, 생각건대 이 노르웨이인처럼 뜨거운 태양과 백사장 그리고 확 트인 바다를 바라보며 그들의 먼 조상이 그랬듯이 바다에서 지혜와 용기를 얻어 지치지 않는 삶의 활력을 유지하는 게 아닌가 하는 생각을 해 보았다. 멋진 노신사였다.

  People met on my backpacking 182 - A cool senior man reading by the sea
  
  Thailand is enjoyable for me since I have many friends to chat to wherever I go. It's because it serves as a gathering point for individuals from all over the world. I feel much more real in Pattaya. It's much more so when I'm on the beach, at the hotel, or on the street. When I just speak to someone, the discussion begins. I speak for as little as 10 minutes and as long as an hour. This is especially true for Westerners, who are accustomed to conversing to strangers.
  
  While wandering on the beach, I noticed a rather unusual look. It was also lovely to see an elderly Westerner sitting by the water, reading a book. I shot a picture of him nearby first, then hesitated. I wanted to ask him a question, but I couldn't since he was so into reading. I figured I'd regret it later if I just passed by. I pleaded for his understanding and began talking. There were several Westerners observing me under the parasol.
  
  "Excuse me, but may I have a moment to speak with you? I snapped a photo of you since you look stunning when reading. It's a really unusual sight nowadays." "No, no problem. That's okay. For me, reading paper books is more convenient than using my smartphone."
  
  "I am from Seoul, Korea. "Where are you from?" "I see. I've heard a lot about Seoul. I am from Norway. Have you travelled Norway?“
  
  "Of course." I first visited Norway in 1993, traveling from Trondheim to Narvik in the country's north. In 1996, I mostly toured about Oslo and Bergen. In January 2021, I went to Tromsø, which is even higher than Narvik near the northern tip of Norway." "You travel much. I believe you visited Tromsø in January to witness the aurora. Is that correct?
  
  "Yes, and I was fortunate enough to witness the aurora." My wife actually enjoyed it more than I did." "I agree." "What do you mean?" "Well, I mean most males do. Are you still traveling with your wife?" "Yes, but what about you?" "I'm alone now. I guess I liked being around my wife. What did you see in Bergen, anyway?
  
  "We've visited all the renowned spots. For example, the Songne fjords, the view of Bergen from the summit of Floyen Mountain, Bridgen's famed wooden structures, and Bergen's defenses. But the most exciting part was that we bought fish at the Bergen seafood market, cooked it in the hotel kitchen, and ate it. Of course, the salmon and shrimp sandwiches were excellent.“
  
  "Ah, you mean smorbrod." Well, it's odd, because salmon is also incredibly pricey in Norway. As a result, the price will be higher in the nations where they import. How about Korea? "Of course it is one of the most expensive fish." "Everything is pricey in Norway, even fish. That's why I like Thailand. Sitting on the beach all day, eating wonderful fruits, and enjoying the sea air is a dream, especially in Norway.
  
  I believe that many Northern Europeans visit Pattaya, especially those from Finland, Sweden, and Denmark. They keep their lives alive, especially throughout the winter, by using their intelligence and courage at sea. Like this Norwegian, they do so while staring at the blazing sun, white beach, and wide sea, much as their distant ancestors did. He was definitely one of those cool senior people.
