오늘은 태국 여자와 결혼해 15년째 살고 있다는 63세의 오스트리아인에 관한 이야기이다. 역시 파타야 해변에서 만났다. 모래밭에 매트를 깔아 놓고 혼자 앉아 망고스틴 등 태국 과일을 먹고 있었다. 매우 안정적이고 여유롭게 보였다. 잠깐 대화를 나누고 싶다고 하니 OK였다. 지금까지 내가 서구인들에게 먼저 대화를 신청해서 ‘No’라며 거절을 하거나 머뭇대는 것조차 본 적이 없다.
그는 ‘빈’(비엔나)에서 북으로 조금 위인 호른에 살고 있다고 했다. 내가 오스트리아를 몇 번 가봤다고 하니 그는 곧 오스트리아의 유명 음악인과 명소를 줄줄댔다. “모차르트, 베토벤, 슈베르트, 요한 슈트라우스, 클림트, 벨베데레 궁전, 쇤브룬 궁전, 호프부르크 궁전, 스테판 광장과 슈테판 대성당, 모차르트의 고향 잘츠부르크, 인스브루크, 린덴호프 궁전과 할슈타트 호수 등.
그가 자랑스럽게 나열한 명단에 내가 기대했던 이름이 없었다. 멜크 수도원(Melk Abbey). 이곳은 ‘빈’에서 기차로 약 1시간 거리에 있는 베네딕트 수도원인데, 이 수도원은 오스트리아와 독일을 통틀어 가장 큰 바로크 양식의 수도원(修道院)이다. 그뿐만 아니라 역사 또한 깊은 곳이다. 물론 오스트리아에는 ‘빈’은 물론 어디를 가나 음악과 미술 등 상위(上位) 문화의 품격과 낭만이 흘러넘친다. 오스트리아를 찾아온 세계인에게 즐거움과 보람을 주기에 부족함이 없는 곳이다. 그의 자랑을 지나치다고 할 순 없었다.
세계여행을 언제부터 했느냐고 물었더니 고등학교를 졸업한 뒤 북미의 미국을 시작으로 중남미의 멕시코와 브라질 그리고 칠레를 여행했다고. 미국 어디를 가봤느냐고 물었더니 이 양반은 한 마디로 고개를 저으며 미국은 더 이상 갈 필요가 없는 곳이란다. 어디를 봤기에 그러냐고 했더니 뉴욕과 워싱턴 그리고 옐로스톤 등 국립공원들을 갔단다. 자기 나라 오스트리아보다 더 아름다운 곳을 못 봤다는 것이다. 요즘 말로 ‘국뽕’이 따로 없었다. 그러나 한편 자국(自國)에 대한 애정과 자부심은 본받을 만했다.
이 양반은 대뜸 자기 스마트폰을 꺼내 태국 여자를 보여주며 자기 아내라며 자랑했다. 잘 웃고 정직하며 요리를 아주 잘한다는 것이다. 자기는 오스트리아 음식보다 태국 음식을 더 좋아한단다. 자기 스마트폰에 저장해 둔 태국 음식 사진과 그 이름들을 불러주는 그의 표정은 정말 행복해 보였다. 가령, ‘똠얌꿍(매운 새우 수프), 솜땀(일명 태국 야채 샐러드), 똠카까이(치킨 코코넛 수프), 팟타이(태국식 볶음면), 얌누아(쇠고기 샐러드) 등.
그런데 이 양반의 태도가 갑자기 돌변하더니 자기 부모님과 친척들 그리고 오스트리아인들을 싸잡아 비판했다. 말인즉슨, 자기 가족들은 태국 음식을 먹으면 배탈이 난다며 손도 안 댄다는 것이고, 오스트리아인들은 태국이 좋다며 태국에 와서 오래 머물면서도 정작 태국 음식은 멀리한다는 것이다. 따라서 그들은 가짜 여행자란다. 누구든 자기 식성에 안 맞으면 안 먹어야지 억지로 먹을 순 없지 않으냐고 했더니, 이 양반 대뜸 내게 묻기를, “당신도 태국 음식을 안 먹느냐?”였다. “난 어딜 가나 그 나라 음식은 뭐든 다 먹는다. 세계 여행자니까.” 내 말이 끝나자 그는 바로 자기 엄지를 들며 마치 나를 세계 여행자로 인정하는 듯한 표정을 지었다.
태국엔 얼마나 자주 오느냐고 물었더니, 매년 온단다. 그리고 6개월씩 머물다 간다고. 내용은 이랬다. 결혼할 때 태국 아내와의 약속은 공평하게 6개월씩 자기 나라에서 살기로 했는데 그것을 계속 지키고 있다는 것. 오스트리아에 추위가 시작되면 태국으로 오고, 태국의 진짜 더위가 시작되면 오스트리아로 간단다. 그의 어감(語感)으로 판단하건대 그의 약속은 반드시 지켜질 것 같았다.
이 양반은 나에게 계속 태국 음식을 자랑하면서 생선 전문집은 어디가 좋고 진짜 솜땀 맛은 어느 집에 가야 한다는 등 얼굴만 안 변했지 음식 취향은 물론 태국인보다 더 태국을 사랑하는 사람으로 보였다. 국제결혼에 성공한 한 사례를 보는 것 같아 나도 기분이 좋았다.

People met on my backpacking 185 - Someone who has kept his vow to his wife for 15 years.
Today's story is about a 63-year-old Austrian who has lived in Thailand for 15 years after marrying a Thai woman. This was also Pattaya Beach. He was sitting alone on a mat on the beach, eating Thai fruits like mangosteen. He appeared extremely steady and comfortable. I requested that he talk with him for a second. He immediately said, Okay.
He stated that he resides in Horn, which is a bit north of Vienna. When I told him I'd been to Austria a few times, he quickly mentioned famous Austrian musicians and attractions: "Mozart, Bethoven, Schubert, Johann Strauss, Klimt, Belvedere Palace, Schonbrunn Palace, Hofburg Palace, Stephansplatz and Stephane Cathedral, Mozart's hometown Salzburg, Innsbruck, Lindenhof Palace, Hallstatt Lake, etc.
The list did not include I expected. It was Melk Abbey. It is a Benedictine abbey located about an hour's train journey from Vienna and the largest baroque monastery in both Austria and Germany. Not only that, but it has an extensive history. Of course, everywhere you go in Vienna, you will encounter high-class culture's elegance and romanticism, as well as music and art. It is a destination that is full of amusement and rewards visitors from all over the world who visit Austria. There was no exaggeration in his statements.
I asked him when he began traveling throughout the world. After graduating from high school, he traveled to the United States in North America, followed by Mexico, Brazil, and Chile in Latin America. I inquired where he had been in the United States. He shook his head, saying he didn't need to go to the United States anymore. When I inquired where he looked, he mentioned national parks like New York, Washington, and Yellowstone. He remarked he had never seen a more beautiful location than Austria, his own country. He was extremely patriotic. However, his passion and patriotism for his country should be imitated.
Suddenly, he took his smartphone and showed me a Thai woman, claiming she was his wife. He described her as pleasant, honest, and a great chef. He stated he preferred Thai food over Austrian food. He showed me photos of Thai food and their titles on his smartphone. He seemed quite delighted. For example, Tom Yum Kung (spicy shrimp soup), Som Tam (also called Thai vegetable salad), Tom Kkai (chicken coconut soup), Pad Thai (fried Thai noodles), Yam Nua (beef salad), and so on.
But his attitude abruptly shifted, and he ridiculed his parents, family, and Austrians. His family despised Thai food, claiming that it irritated their stomachs. Austrians spend a lot of time in Thailand yet rarely eat Thai food. So he dubbed them "fake travelers." I informed him that it is perfectly OK for anyone to refuse to consume foods they dislike. He abruptly exclaimed, "Do you mean you don't eat Thai food, either?" "Yes, I eat well wherever I go to keep going across the world." When I finished, he raised his thumb and appeared to identify me as a globe traveler.
When I inquired how frequently he would visit Thailand, he answered he would return every year. And he stated he stays for six months. When he married her, he pledged to spend six months living in her home country. He has kept it. He stated that they travel to Thailand when the cold starts in Austria and return to Austria when the genuine heat begins in Thailand. His tone indicated that he intended to keep his commitment.
He started bragging about his Thai food, telling me which restaurant excels in fish and which had the true Thai salad flavor. He hasn't altered his face, but he appears to love Thailand more than Thai people, not to mention his food preferences. It was fantastic to see an example of a successful multinational marriage.
