  숙소에서 아침 식사 중 옆자리에 있는 이로부터 예상치 못한 질문을 받았다. 그도 부인과 함께 식사 중이었다. 그는 우리가 식탁에서 한국말을 하는 걸 듣고 나에게 한국에 관한 최근의 궁금증 가운데 하나를 묻기로 했다고. 그는 60대의 이탈리아인이었다.
  
  그는 어제와 오늘 호텔 주변에서 엄청난 폭죽(爆竹)을 터뜨리는 걸 보고 바로 중국인들의 명절인 ‘춘절(春節)’임을 알았다고 했다. 어떻게 알았느냐고 물었더니, 그는 이탈리아에도 중국인들이 많은데 그들의 업소와 주거지에서는 춘절이 되면 행인이 다니는 도로에서도 그런 막무가내의 소동(騷動)을 일으킨다는 것이다. 그는 중국인들의 그런 행동을 매우 천박하고 미신적인 저질의 문화라고 했다.
  
  그의 질문:
  “나는 한국을 오랜 역사와 전통을 가진 자주적이고 독립적이며 한글을 포함한 독특하고 개성이 강한 문화를 많이 가진 나라라고 생각한다. 그래서 한국은 오늘날 세계가 부러워하는 선진국이 됐다고 생각한다. 그런데 어제 저녁 CNN TV 뉴스를 봤는데, 한국에도 중국과 같은 춘절이란 음력 새해(설)를 위한 4일간의 연휴를 즐긴다고 했다. 그리고 한국인들은 그 연휴 동안 부모님이 계신 고향을 방문해서 조상의 제사를 지낸다고 했다. 나는 그 말을 듣고 내가 알고 있는 중국인들의 춘절과 같다는 걸 알 수 있었다. 많은 음식을 차려 놓고 절을 하는 모습도 중국과 같다고 생각했다.
  그렇다면 한국의 설과 중국의 춘절과는 다른 점이 없다. 내가 궁금한 건 그 기원이 한국인가 중국인가이다. 같은 문화권에 있는 일본도 음력 설이 아닌 세계 공통의 양력설인 1월 1일을 쇠고 있는데 그건 왜인지도 궁금하다.
  
  나의 답변:
  한국 역사 역시 중국의 역사만큼 길다. 그래서 한국도 중국처럼 많은 독자적 제도와 문화를 가지고 있다. 그중 하나가 바로 설날이다. 두 나라가 즐겁게 새해를 맞이한다는 의미는 같으나 방법이 다르다. 한국의 설날은 제사라는 형식을 통해 조상에게 정중히 감사드리며 새해에도 큰 복을 주십사 간절히 절을 하는 엄숙한 분위기이지만, 중국은 새해맞이를 요란스러운 폭죽을 터뜨리고 사자춤을 추는 등 인민 전체 즉 집단적 국가 행사와도 같다.
  일본 역시 예전엔 한국과 중국처럼 음력 설을 쇘다. 그러나 일본은 잘 알다시피 메이지 유신(1868) 때 근대화의 일환으로 세계 기준에 맞는 양력을 국가의 표준 달력으로 삼았다. 동시에 음력은 폐지했고 곧 양력 1월 1일을 설날로 쇠기 시작했다. 이중과세를 쇠지 않음으로서 국력 낭비를 최소화했고, 나아가 세계 시장을 선점해 국가 경쟁력을 키워 세계 최강의 반열에 오른 것이다. 세계가 놀 때 놀고, 세계가 일할 때 일한 것이다. 그들에겐 이처럼 국제 사회의 변화, 즉 세계의 흐름을 일찍 파악해 국익을 극대화하는 지혜가 있었던 것이다.
  
  덧붙인다면 한국도 늦긴 했지만 음력 설과 제사에 대한 인식이 많이 변한 건 사실이다. 적어도 국민의 절반 이상은 설날에 제사를 지내는 대신 가족과 함께 국내외로 여행을 떠난다. 설날 연휴 제주도와 스키장 등 관광지 예약은 한 달 전에 끝났다거나, 연휴 전날 인천국제공항에는 50만 명이 북적였다는 TV 뉴스를 봤다.
  
  그의 뒷얘기를 듣고 그는 반중(反中) 인사라는 걸 알았다. 중국보다는 자기 나라에 더 불만이 많았다. 중국의 일대일로(一帶一路)라는 달콤한 속임수에 넘어간 이탈리아 정부의 무능을 비난한 것이다. G7 국가일 뿐만 아니라, EU 국가 중 유일하게 이탈리아만이 바보짓을 했다는 것. 다행히 지금은 중공의 속임수에서 벗어난 상태여서 안심한다고 했다. 그의 음성과 눈빛에서 팍스로마나의 옛 영광을 잊지 않고 있음을 강하게 느낄 수 있었다.
  
  세계인들의 한국에 대한 관심이 날로 늘어난다는 것은 정말 기분좋은 일이다. 예전과 비교하면 더욱 그렇다.

  (*참고: 한국에도 이중과세의 폐단을 일찍 간파한 위대한 두 지도자가 있었다. 국부 이승만 대통령과 근대화 대통령 박정희였다. 건국을 선포한 1년 후 이승만 정권은 1949년 신정을 휴무일로 지정했지만, 민도(民度)가 따르지 못해 실패했다. 1969년 박정희 정권 역시 이중과세 폐단의 심각성을 재확인한 뒤 그 개선책으로 ‘가정의례준칙’을 발표해 성공했다. 하지만, 안타깝게도 후기 정권들을 거치면서 이중과세는 부활해 오늘에 이른다. 언제까지 이중 설을 쇠는 세계 유일의 나라가 될지 두고 볼 일이다.)

  People met on my backpacking 186 - What is the difference between Korean and Chinese lunar new year?
  
  This morning, while eating breakfast at our hotel restaurant, I received an unexpected inquiry from the man next to me. He was also dining beside his wife. He overheard us speaking Korean at the table and decided to ask me one of his most current inquiries about Korea. He was an Italian in his sixties.
  
  When he watched big fireworks go off surrounding the hotel yesterday and today, he understood it was the Chinese Lunar New Year. When questioned how he knew it, he replied, "There are many Chinese in Italy, too. They create the same fuss on passersby' roadways during Lunar New Year in their workplaces and homes." He characterized Chinese conduct as vulgar, superstitious, and low-quality.
  
  His question: "I consider Korea an independent country with a rich history and diverse cultures, including Hangul." That is why I believe Korea has evolved into an advanced country that the rest of the world envies. I observed on CNN TV news yesterday evening that Koreans, like Chinese, celebrate the Lunar New Year with a four-day holiday. During the festival, Koreans paid visits to their parents' hometowns and performed ancestral ceremonies. When I heard it, I recognized it as the Chinese lunar new year, which I was familiar with. I assumed that the way they prepared a lot of food was the same as in China.
  
  If this is the case, the lunar New Year in Korea and China is identical. My question is, is the origin Korean or Chinese? I'm curious as to why Japan, which has the same culture, celebrates January 1, the world's common solar calendar, rather than the lunar new year.
  
  My response: Korean history is as long as that of China. That is why Korea, like China, has several separate systems and civilizations. One of these is Lunar New Year. The two countries celebrate the New Year in similar but distinct ways. Korea's Lunar New Year has a serious tone, with people gently thanking their ancestors through rituals and enthusiastically bowing for good luck in the next year. China celebrates the New Year with spectacular fireworks and lion dances that include the entire population.
  
  Japan, like Korea and China, once honored the Lunar New Year. However, as part of modernization during the Meiji Restoration (1868), Japan adopted a solar calendar that fits international standards as its normal national calendar. At the same time, the lunar calendar was abolished, and January 1st of the solar calendar was quickly adopted as the solar New Year. They reduced the waste of national power by not celebrating the double New Year. Furthermore, they became the world's strongest by anticipating the global market and increasing national competitiveness. They played when the world was fun and worked when the world was productive. They had the foresight to maximize national interests by recognizing changes in the international community.
  
  Although it is a little late, Korea's perspective of the Lunar New Year and its customs has shifted dramatically. At least half of Koreans travel with their family instead of doing ancestral ceremonies over the Lunar New Year. Bookings for tourist sites like as Jeju Island and ski resorts for the Lunar New Year vacation expired one month ago. According to TV news, 500,000 people packed Incheon International Airport on the eve of the vacation.
  
  After hearing his tale, I knew he was anti-Chinese. He had more issues about his nation. He criticized the Italian government's stupidity in falling for China's sweet trick of One Belt, One Road. Italy is a G7 nation. Of course, it is an EU member. However, he maintained that Italy was the only country that had done something dumb. Fortunately, he expressed relief that Italy is finally free of the Chinese scam. His speech and eyes made it clear that he had not forgotten Paxromana's former greatness.
  
  I feel pleased because I see every day how people all around the world are becoming more interested in Korea.
