  우연의 일치였을까. 오늘도 나는 파타야 해변에서 또 다른 89세의 초고령인 한 분을 만났다. 어제 그분은 프랑스인이었고 오늘 그분은 이탈리아인이었다. 두 분의 공통점은 나이에 비해 시력 청력 언어 구사력 등 다 좋아 보였다. 영어 표현력 또한 그랬다. 또 있다. 두 분 다 세계여행을 많이 했고 특히 이곳 파타야에는 근 10년 동안 매년 6개월씩 장기 체류한다는 것. 사실 그동안 이곳에서 내가 만났던 많은 서구인 고령자들은 거의 다 6개월 단위의 장기 체류자들이었다. 일 년을 절반으로 나눠 본국(本國)을 오가며 신나게 사는 멋쟁이들이었다. 얘길 들어 보니, 이들도 우리처럼 태국에 3개월 무비자 체류에, 원하면 또 3개월 연장이 아주 쉽다는 것. 물론 자국(自國)에 비해 물가(物價)가 싸다는 것과 따뜻한 겨울 날씨 등 장점이 많았다.
  
  이분들과 얘기를 나누다 보면 자기 나라를 사랑하는 애국심이 부러울 정도다. 그냥 나이만 먹는다고 다 애국심이 저절로 생기는 게 아니었다. 얘기를 나누다 보면 그 애국심이 구체적으로 나타난다. 세계가 돌아가는 국제사회와 정치에 항상 귀를 열어놓고 살고, 자국(自國)의 역사에 대한 지식과 자부심이 대단했다. 생각건대, 이는 어릴 적부터 조국애(祖國愛)가 남다른 부모와 국가관(國家觀)이 분명한 학교 선생님으로부터 나라 사랑하는 법과 자긍심을 제대로 배웠기 때문이다. 일종의 보람된 자식 교육이고 성공한 국민 교육인 셈이다. 가령, 이들은 자기 나라를 세운 건국자와 초대 대통령을 그리고 자기 나라 국기(國旗)를 끔찍이도 아끼고 사랑하고 존중한다는 것. 이는 곧 EU 국가와 이스라엘은 물론 미국 일본 등 선진 강대국들이 보이는 일치된 현상이다.
  
  이분과 많은 얘기를 나눈 것 가운데 역시 역사(歷史) 얘기가 재미있었다. 내가 물었다. “당신은 이탈리아의 고대 역사 인물과 중세 그리고 현대의 주요 인물들 가운데 가장 좋아하는 지도자가 있다면 누구를 들 수 있습니까?” 그가 답했다. “고대 인물은 ‘마르쿠스 브루투스’이고 중세 인물은 ‘갈릴레이 갈릴레오’, 그리고 현대 인물은 ‘실비오 베를루스코니’입니다.” 내가 재질문했다. “브루투스는 로마의 대표적 영웅이자 자기를 가장 아끼고 사랑했던 양부(養父)로 알려진 ‘카이사르’를 암살한 자 아닙니까?” “맞습니다. 그래서 나는 그를 더 좋아합니다. 그는 사랑하는 카이사르보다 더 사랑한 로마를 선택한 겁니다. 그는 무엇이 더 중요한지 분석하고 결단을 내리는 용기와 지혜를 겸비한 지도자였어요.”
  
  “갈릴레오는 실질적으로 지동설(地動說)을 과학적으로 입증함으로써 중세의 암흑기(暗黑期)를 종식한 천재 사제(司祭)이자 과학자입니다. 생각해 보세요. 그가 없었다면 천동설(天動說)을 신봉했던 기독교 중심의 정치는 물론 과학 등 모든 분야는 더 오랜 기간 어둠 속에 갇혀 있었을 겁니다. ‘베를루스코니‘는 분명 국가 지도자감이 아니었어요. 그의 천성이 그랬어요. 그런데도 그는 정치 경제 언론 등 권력의 핵심을 다 잡았지요. 그리고 온갖 추문과 부정부패 여성 스캔들 등으로 국가 망신을 다 시켰습니다. 국가 경제도 폭망 수준이었어요. 그런데도 나는 그를 욕하기보단 우리 이탈리아 국민을 더 욕합니다. 왜냐면 어리석은 그들이 ’베를루스코니‘를 연속 3회나 총리로 뽑아주었으니까요. 그는 당연히 국민의 수준에 맞는 정치를 한 겁니다. 그가 한 말이 있어요. <세상(국민)이 그토록 속기를 바라니 그냥 속도록 내버려 두어라.>”
  
  그에게 나는 세계사의 굵직한 흔적이 남은 곳을 직접 찾아가 보는걸 좋아한다고 했다. 내가 1995년 튀니지의 ‘자마’를 방문했던 것도 그래서였다고. 그곳은 카르타고의 ‘한니발 장군’과 로마의 ‘스키피오 장군’이 장장 16년이나 끌었던 2차 포에니 전쟁을 끝낸 곳이다. 물론 스키피오 장군의 승리로 끝났지만, 내가 그에게 물었던 것은 그는 과연 ‘한니발 장군’과 ‘스키피오 장군’ 중 누구를 더 위대하다고 생각하는지 그것이 알고 싶었다.
  
  역시 그는 ‘브루투스’의 비교급 어법을 사용했다. “나는 물론 스키피오 장군을 좋아합니다. 그러나 나는 한니발 장군을 더 좋아합니다. 한니발은 한 번도 평화란 말을 하지 않았습니다. 그에게 평화란 한 마디로 노예적 근성의 인간들만이 내뱉는 굴종적 언어였어요. 즉, 싸움을 두려워하고 공짜만 바라는 비겁하고 천박한 자들을 말한 겁니다. 그에겐 오직 전쟁에서 승리하는 그 자체가 평화였지요. 싸우지 않고 얻는 평화란 무덤 속 평화와 같은 가짜 평화라는 걸 그는 잘 알고 있었습니다. 만약 당시 막강한 국력과 군사력을 가진 로마 제국에 한니발처럼 모든 지혜와 용기를 다 갖춘 유능한 장군이 한 명만 있었다면 로마는 필경 역사상 전무후무(前無後無)한 가장 거대한 영토를 가진 제국(帝國)으로 기록됐을 겁니다.”
  
  이분에게서도 역시 어제의 그분처럼 또 다른 위대한 식민제국이 낳은 절대 꺼지지 않는 불타는 애국심을 본 듯했다. 분명 나이만 먹는다고 해서 다 애국자가 되고, 후손(後孫)을 위해 나라 걱정을 하는 진짜 어른이 되는 것도 아님을 알았다. 나는 이 소중한 교훈을 오늘도 또 다른 국적의 초고령자와 긴 대화를 통해서 재확인했다.
  
  나는 아마 어느 외국인으로부터 내가 물었던 질문처럼, “당신은 한국 고대사에서 가장 위대한 지도자를 들라면 누구를 들 수 있습니까?”라는 질문을 받는다면, 나는 바로 답할 것이다. 고구려와 백제를 신라와 함께 묶은 뒤 당시 세계 최강의 당군(唐軍)을 퇴치하고 ‘통일신라(統一新羅)’의 이름으로 천년(千年) 왕국을 만든 문무왕(文武王)과 함께 태종무열왕(太宗武烈王)과 김유신(金庾信) 장군을 자랑스럽게 말할 것이다. 그래야 오늘날 성공한 ‘大韓民國’의 원초적(原初的) 뿌리를 말할 수 있기 때문이다. 이는 상상만 해도 기분이 좋다.
  
  이런 기분을 계속 유지하려면 나는 오늘 만난 89세의 이탈리아 어른이 한 말은 잊지 말아야겠다. 자기 나라를 망치고 욕보인 당사자, ‘벨라루스코니’ 총리보다 그런 자격 미달의 사기꾼을 국가 지도자로 뽑은 이탈리아 국민을 수치스럽게 생각하며, 그들의 어리석음을 훨씬 더 심하게 욕했다는 사실을 잊지 말아야겠다는 생각을 해 보았다.

  People on my backpacking 189 - Patriotism grows from an early age
  
  What a coincidence! Today, I encountered another 89-year-old super-aged man on Pattaya Beach. Yesterday he was French, and today he is Italian. They share similar eyesight, hearing, and language abilities, and both have traveled extensively, especially in Pattaya, where they spent six months annually for ten years. Most older Westerners in Thailand stay for six months or more, as they can stay without a visa for three months and renew it for another three months. They enjoy lower prices and pleasant winter weather.
  
  I admired their patriotism of their countries, which is evident not just as people age but also due to their openness to the world and pride in their history. This patriotism is attributed to their parents and school teachers who have taught them about their country since childhood. Their trait to love and respect their country's founder and flag was a consistent with advanced powers like the USA, Japan, EU countries, and Israel. This education is a successful national education, fostering a strong sense of national pride.
  
  I asked him who was his favorite leaders in ancient Italy, the Middle Ages, and the modern era. He identified Marcus Brutus as the ancient figure, Galileo as the medieval figure, and Silvio Berlusconi as the modern figure. I told him Brutus was killer, who assassinated Caesar, the representative hero of Rome and the adoptive father of him. But he said, Brutus chose Rome over Caesar and was a leader with courage and insight, making judgments about what was most essential.
  
  Galileo, a brilliant priest and scientist, played a significant role in the Middle Ages by proving the heliocentric hypothesis. Berlusconi, a national leader, lacked national leadership but seized control of political, economic, and media institutions. However, he criticized the Italians for choosing Berlusconi as Prime Minister three times in a row. And so his politics were on the level of his people he said. He was allegedly quoted as saying, "The people who want to be deceived by themselves can be deceived.“
  
  Told him that I prefer to go see for myself where the huge vestiges of global history still exist. That's why I went to Tunisia's Zama in 1995. That was where General Hannibal of Carthage and Roman General Scipio put an end to the 16-year-long the 2nd Punic War. Of course, it concluded with General Scipio's victory, but I wondered who he believed was more important: General Hannibal or General Scipio?
  
  He again used Brutus' comparative phraseology and favored General Hannibal over General Scipio, arguing that the word of peace was subservient and only used by weak, shallow slaves. He saw winning a war as peace in itself, and he believed that peace achieved without fighting was phony. He added that if the Roman Empire had had a competent commander like Hannibal, Rome would have been remembered as the largest empire in history.
  
  Like yesterday's man, I sensed that this man possessed the fervent patriotism that another great colonial power gave birth to. I realized that just because individuals become older doesn't mean they all become patriots and responsible adults who care about their nation for their children. I again learned this vital lesson today via lengthy chats with a super-aged person of another nationality.
  
  If a foreigner asked me this question: "Who is the greatest leader in the history of ancient Korea?" I would gladly mention King Munmu, King Muyeol, and General Kim Yu-shin, who unified Goguryeo and Baekje with Silla, exterminated Tang warriors, and established a thousand-year reign known as 'Unified Silla.' That is because I can explain the origins of today's prosperous 'Korea'. Well, you know, just picturing it makes me happy.
  
  To keep this thrilling emotion alive, I should remember myself that the 89-year-old Italian I met today cursed the Italian people's not only folly but awful, dumb, low-quality crook as their national leader. Because he claimed Italians were even worse than the "Belarusconi" Prime Minister, who destroyed and humiliated their own country, Italy.
