People met on my backpacking190 - Indian Engineering Students' Perceptions on Korean Society

The two young men I met today were also rather distinctive. They were from Amritsar, northern India. This is the road to Pakistan. They usually stay overnight here. In 1996, I also passed through here on my way to Pakistan. The tasks of Indian and Pakistani border guards have shifted. It was a show stage filled with laughs. One of the sights at Amritsar was a massive golden temple that appeared to be floating on a lake. It is the largest sacred place in Sikhism.

They were working in Dubai. They were university classmates. Coincidentally, they were sent to a Dubai subsidiary as engineers to oversee computer development. They came from the Mumbai Institute of Technology, one of India's most prestigious institutes in the world. I informed them that during my 14-month backpacking of India, I once visited Nehru University in New Delhi and Mumbai National University. I told them a lot about my time in India and the Nehru University I attended.

Each took a three-day holiday and flew to Pattaya. They described it as a site they had always longed to visit. When I questioned why, their response was somewhat amusing. They stated that if they were accepted into an Indian engineering school, they would visit Pattaya to celebrate. In other words, if they came here, they could release the stress that had built up so far. Everything is free here, even religion, which is not common in India. Having experienced both cultures, I quickly grasped what they meant.

I spoke my views on India. "India is quite different now from the India I have known. Since Prime Minister Modi took office, the economy has expanded dramatically. This is because the Modi administration has continued to offer financial assistance to the scientific community. As a result, I believe India has a very bright future due to its tremendous scientific skill and technology resources." I informed them that India's science was already at the forefront of the globe. However, their reaction was disagreeable.

They explained why. "In terms of India's GDP, you are correct. However, per capita income remains a long way off. The divide between affluent and poor has grown. India, for example, boasts several of the world's wealthiest people. Carlos Slim, Gautam Adani, Shiv Nadar, among others. However, India's per capita income remains less than 3,000 dollars. The worst cities include Mumbai, Old Delhi, and Kolkata. Since you've been to Mumbai, you should know the truth.¡°

"So we believe that no matter how excellent India's science is, it will do little to narrow the wealth divide in India. I believe there is also a religious struggle involved. We've lived in Dubai for a few years. What distinguishes this region from India is the lack of religious turmoil and the little gap between the affluent and the poor. Everyone lives like royalty. When we think about China, we become angrier. They are one of the most ruthless communist governments in the world. Nonetheless, their per capita income was above $10,000. It's strange, yet it appears to be true.¡°

I explained, "I've seen a lot of India's dark side. But I've witnessed more of China's darker side. India displayed optimism, while China only showed grief. Meanwhile, the disparity between the affluent and the poor was strangely greater in communist and socialist nations that emphasized equality. Syria, Venezuela, Russia, China, etc. Of course, the USA, the EU, and Japan also had homeless people, beggars, and drug addicts on the streets and in parks. They are the finest welfare states, despite being mature liberal democracies that place the highest importance on people and human rights, but I think it won't change from birth to death. This is the worldview that I perceive.¡°

Of course, Korea is not an exception. Light and darkness coexist. Because it is a natural premise. Korea is a country that has created something from nothing. However, rapid expansion has led to some adverse effects. Despite challenges, skilled people from other countries, including India, continue to work in Korea. Wait and see. Your concerns about India will soon be solved, and you will surpass China to become the world's center. "If free democracy does not collapse.¡°

I can confidently tell them about India's bright future since they are already a nuclear power, second only to the space sector, and have limitless cutting-edge technologies like as the metaverse and super huge AI such as Chet GPT, both of which are symbols of superior science. India has already entered the global IT sector from the bottom up. They are not simply engineers. They have superior technology and the capacity to freely speak English, the world's official language. This compares significantly to Korea.

Indeed, India's competitiveness is demonstrated by the widespread employment of elite Indian engineering graduates from India's top colleges across the world, including Korea and the USA. As a result, they were knowledgeable on sensitive Korean news. They said, "Our pals work at Samsung Electronics, LG, and SK in Korea. They claim that Koreans despise Samsung Electronics, the multinational firm that the rest of the world admires. Putting Chairman Lee Jae-yong in jail and organizing daily demonstrations with high-performance microphones in front of Samsung headquarters.¡°

"In reality, we prefer Samsung Electronics over other Korean firms and want to win the competition. Simply said, just as Samsung feeds Korea, India requires businesses that can do the same. If Samsung existed in India, the worst forms of poverty in Mumbai and others would have been eliminated. Similarly, the doctor's strike. India has robust drug competition, but it lacks a large number of physicians. Unlike Korea, India's brightest students prefer engineering universities over medical schools. Indian physicians would undoubtedly appreciate the government's decision to considerably boost the number of medical students, as Korea has done. Why do Korea's unsolvable issues persist?¡°

I did not provide a clear answer to this question. Because in some respects, they appeared to know more about Korea than I did. Again, it was critical to have plenty of precise information and understanding. I felt it had nothing to do with age at all. I realized once more that the only way to become smart is to continually look, listen, read, and learn by speaking.

  Thanks for reading.
