  파타야 해변에는 철봉과 평행봉 등이 설치돼 있다. 이용자들은 청년, 장년, 노년 구분 없이 평소 자기 몸 관리에 관심 있는 자들이 모인다. 어떤 이들은 잠깐 멈춰 철봉 혹은 평행봉에 한두 번 매달려 보기도 한다. 이들 대부분은 이곳의 장기 체류자 서구인들이다. 그러다 보니 국적도 나이도 다양하다. 낮에는 너무 더워서 피하고 주로 오전과 오후에 모인다. 곧 말 친구가 된다. 다양한 주제의 얘깃거리가 오간다.
  
  오늘 만난 친구는 폴란드인이다. 이 친구처럼 몸짱들은 거의 다 이곳에서 한껏 근육미를 자랑한다. 주변의 시선을 끌 만하다. 내가 칭찬을 했다. “몸매가 멋있습니다. 근육이 잘 발달해 있군요. 언제부터 운동했나요?” 등등. 그의 답. “고등학생일 때 시작했어요. 지금도 거의 매일 운동을 합니다. 운동 시설이 없으면 푸시업으로 대신합니다.” 등등.
  
  나도 아직 자신 있는 것은 평행봉과 철봉이다. 팔굽혀펴기, 회전과 턱걸이 그리고 푸시업 등이다. 지금도 한다. 나도 한때 근육미를 뽐내 본 적이 있다며 사진을 보여주기도 한다. 내 스마트폰에는 이런 사진을 포함 세계여행 중 찍은 사진들이 저장돼 있다. 대화를 나눌 때 백 마디 말보다 한 장의 사진이 훨씬 효과적일 때 보여준다. 남아공 친구와 대화 중 내가 남아공에서 찍은 사진을 꺼내 보이면 금방 분위기가 달라진다.
  
  이 친구는 폴란드의 옛 수도인 크라쿠프에서 왔다. 평범한 직장인으로 휴가를 얻어 평소에 가 보고 싶었던 동남아시아를 여행 중이다. 흔히들 보이는 여행 루트처럼 이 친구도 태국과 그 주변 국가들을 도는 것이다. 오늘날 외국인들은 내가 한국을 강조하지 않아도 먼저 한국에 관해 묻는다. 이 친구 역시 그랬다. 한국에서 수입한 K9 자주포(自走砲)를 언급하며 한국 무기를 칭찬했다.
  
  자기 나라가 지금 당장은 러시아의 공격을 받고 있지 않지만, 러시아의 침략으로 전쟁 중인 우크라이나가 패하면 폴란드 역시 전쟁터가 될 것이란다. 폴란드는 가능한 한 많은 한국산 무기를 확보해야 한다고 했다. 나토 회원국이니 우크라이나의 경우와 다르지 않냐고 했더니 그는 고개를 저으며 현 나토군은 옛날과 달리 병력이나 무기나 형편없어서 러시아를 막을 수 없단다.
  
  화제를 돌려, 나는 그에게 10년 전에 아내와 함께 배낭여행으로 폴란드 여행 중 바르샤바를 포함 체스토호바, 카토비세와 루블린 그리고 크라쿠프를 여행했다고 했다. 이 친구는 내가 ‘카토비세’를 언급하자마자 바로 알아차렸다. 우리가 아우슈비츠에 갔다는 것을. 그러나 그는 아우슈비츠를 더 언급하지 않았다. 대신 어디서 무엇을 보았는지를 물었다. 이 친구는 ‘크라쿠프’에 대한 자부심이 대단했다. 지난 500년 동안 폴란드의 수도(首都)였기 때문이다. 마치 한국인이 천년 수도의 경주를 자랑하듯이.
  
  우리가 본 대표적인 곳을 말했다. 특히 700년 된 ‘비엘리츠카’ 소금 성당, 성모승천 성당, 국립미술관, 바벨성, 수십 개의 검은 의자가 놓여 있는 유대인 집결지 광장 등. 그는 내 설명을 듣고 난 뒤, 바벨성과 성모승천 성당을 언급하며 교황 요한 바오로 2세를 상기시켰다. ‘바벨성’엔 교황의 동상이 있고 ‘성모승천 성당’은 교황이 되기 전 10년간 근무한 곳이다. 그는 교황 요한 바오로 2세가 한국에 두 번이나 방문(1984, 1989)한 것도 잘 알고 있었다.
  
  그는 또한 성모승천 성당 종탑에서 매시간 정각에 ‘헤이날’이라는 트럼펫을 불다 금방 멈추는 사연을 말했다. 이는 1241년, 갑자기 들이닥친 몽골군의 침략을 알리다 죽은 어느 나팔수를 기리기 위한 연주라는 것. 이는 당시에 유럽까지 진격한 천하무적(天下無敵)의 몽골 기병대가 얼마나 무서웠는지를 잘 말해준다. 나에게도 몽골계의 피가 흐른다고 하자 이 친구는 멈칫하는 제스처를 취하며 웃어 넘겼다.
  
  사실 이 친구에게 꼭 묻고 싶었던 것 중 하나를 놓쳤다. ‘비엘리트카’의 소금 성당이 있는 지하의 화장실 입구에는 ‘괴테’의 동상이 있었는데, 왜 하필이면 화장실 입구에 놓였는지 혹시 이 친구로부터 뭔가 재밌는 에피소드라도 들을 수 있는지 정말 궁금했는데.

  People met on my backpacking 191 - A young Polish man who envied Korea
  
  Steel and parallel bars have been placed at Pattaya Beach. If all users want to manage their bodies, they join together. The majority of them are Westerners who have stayed here for a long period. They come from a variety of countries and ages. Because it is too hot throughout the day, people avoid going out and prefer to assemble in the mornings and afternoons. They soon engage in chats. They do chats about a variety of issues.
  
  The guy I met today is Polish. Most of them are muscular, like him. They deserve attention. I complimented him, adding, "You have a great figure." Your muscles are well-developed. When did you begin working out? And so forth. He said, "I started working out every day. I still exercise every day. If I don't have an athletic facility, I perform push-ups."
  
  What I can now do is make a parallel bar and an iron bar. I showed him my photo, claiming that I formerly flaunted my muscular attractiveness. These images, as well as others from my global journey, are stored on my smartphone. This is because a single photo has a greater impact during a conversation. For example, when I show him a photo of me in S. Africa while conversing with a S. African acquaintance, the mood shifts immediately.
  
  He is from Kraków, Poland's old capital. He is an everyday office worker who is flying to Southeast Asia, a destination he has always longed to see. Today, outsiders ask me about Korea first, even if I don't highlight it. So did he. He lauded Korea's armaments, namely the K9 self-propelled guns that Poland bought from Korea.
  
  He stated that his nation is not now under Russian attack; nevertheless, if Ukraine, which is at war, falls due to Russian aggression, Poland will become a battleground. He suggested that Poland obtain as many Korean weapons as possible. I assured him that it was fine because Poland is a NATO member. He shook his head, saying that, unlike in the past, the present NATO force lacks personnel and weaponry and is unable to deter Russian attack.
  
  To change the subject, I told him that ten years ago, my wife and I went backpacking around Poland, seeing Warsaw, Katowice, Ruble, and Krakow. He understood as soon as I said Katowice that we had visited Auschwitz. He made no more mention of Auschwitz, however. Instead, he inquired about what we had seen. He took immense delight in Krakow. It was because it had been Poland's capital for almost 500 years. It is as if Koreans boasted about Kyongju, the thousand-year-old capital of Silla.
  
  I informed him about the notable sights we viewed in Krakow. Especially the 700-year-old Wieliczka Salt Cathedral, the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary, the National Museum of Art, the Wawel Royal Castle, and the Jewish Gatherer Square, which has dozens of black seats. After hearing my answer, he reminded Pope John Paul II of the Castle of Babel and the Cathedral of the Virgin Mary. There is a statue of Pope John Paul II at the castle. He spent ten years working at St. Mary's Basilica prior to becoming Pope. He was also fully aware that Pope John Paul II had visited Korea twice (1984 and 1989).
  
  He also narrated the tale of blowing the 'Hejnal' trumpet every hour at the Virgin Mary's bell tower and then suddenly ceasing. This is a performance to honor a trumpeter who died in 1241 while indicating the unexpected invasion of the Mongolian army. This demonstrates how afraid the powerful Mongolian cavalry was when they attacked Europe at the time. When I informed him I was of Mongolian heritage, he pretended to be astonished before laughing.
  
  I actually forgot to ask him one of my questions. A statue of Goethe stood at the entrance to the basement of the Bielitka Salt Cathedral, and I pondered why it was placed there. If I had asked him this question, I would have heard some fascinating stories from him.
