People met on my backpacking 197 - The reason why Finns are happy

According to the United Nations' annual Global Happiness Index, Nordic nations are the happiest in the world. Finland, in particular, has been number one for seven years. What's the secret? They dominate the happiness that everyone seeks. There must be a specific cause, I think. As a result, Nordic nations dominate the top ranks in happiness rankings, reflecting their robust social support system and high level of life. So, what distinguishes Finland, which continues to be number one?

I found the answer in a park I visited in Finland. Back in 1993, globe backpacking trips were uncommon, except for Westerners, Japanese, and a few Koreans. I was on a month-long trip to Northern Europe. I traveled to Kemi via rail from Helsinki (5 hours). From there, I got on the bus three hours north to Sodanquire. It was October, yet it was really chilly. I hardly ate at the gas station.

On a morning walk in the neighborhood, I noticed some folks gathering and exercising at the park. I stood for a long and watched. I observed an unusual situation. After they finished their workout, they stood and prayed before returning to their seats. I entered the park out of curiosity. There were a few headstones along the park's edge. They prayed there. I came to the guesthouse and inquired. The headstones commemorated local patriots and military heroes who died battling Soviet forces during the Stalin period.

The Finnish values of anticommunism is widely recognized. It is due to its poor relations with the Soviet Union. On November 30, 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Finland. Finland, of course, was short on troops and other resources. However, Finland did not give up. They battled back throughout the winter with a tiny number of ski troopers, using guerilla warfare to finally defeat the Soviet Union. The Finnish-Soviet War is also known as the Winter War.

They value soldiers. The whole nation regards troops as heroes who gave their life for their country. They inter the souls of patriotic martyrs in their locality at the nearby location and give thanks prayers from time to time. They show honor to warriors who died while fighting heroically. Such thankfulness might result in happiness. It's no surprise that they've been named the world's happiest people.

The timeless Finnish hero lives deep within every Finn's heart. Karl Gustaf Emile Mannerheim. Without Mannerheim, Finland would not be characterized as it is now. His comment is renowned. "Without the awareness that soldiers are protecting their country, fortresses, cannons, and foreign aid are meaningless." He served as a general before becoming president. The world's first happy country is one that remembers and celebrates its heroes who made sacrifices for the country.

Korea has heroes who are respected across the world. They are: President Syngman Rhee, President Park Chung-hee, and General Baek Seon-yeop, etc. However, Koreans do not recognize heroes. People in other nations purposefully create and serve heroes. However, Koreans reject real heroes. Furthermore, Koreans despise and cursed heroes. Koreans cannot have a high happiness level. I dare claim that Koreans do not deserve happiness or blessings.

  Thanks for reading.
