I owe my happiness to patriots like Syngman Rhee and Park Chung-hee, who sacrificed their lives to ensure a better future for other Koreans. We are enjoying prosperity thanks to the sacrifices made by our former leaders.
 
Look at North Korea. The country rejected Syngman Rhee and instead chose a 33-year-old guerrilla fighter and Soviet officer, Kim Il-sung, to be the founder of their state. Kim came to power in 1948 at the age of 36 and reigned supreme for 46 years until his death in 1994 at the age of 82. His sons have been guaranteed hereditary succession of power and enjoy the full trappings of a dictator to this day.
 
He has built lavish summer homes in some of the most scenic locations in the world and amassed a harem of beautiful virgin women there as ordinary North Koreans starve to death. The only change North Koreans can catch a glimpse of the outside world is when they defect risking their lives. They have never even hear of golf and white rice and meat are rarities in their diets. They barely manage to eke out a living as they shiver in the cold. I am living like a king compared to those people.
 
I am also grateful to my parents. They were not shaken by the propaganda of the Soviet Red Army spearheaded by a young guerrilla leader called Kim Il-sung during the establishment of the Republic of Korea from 1945 to 1948. Consistently from the beginning, he kept his faith in Syngman Rhee, saying, 'There is no patriot like Dr. Rhee.' He did not blame or criticize the Republic of Korea until he decided to return based on his support for Rhee. He always said that his country is good. Thanks to him, I am spending the twilight years of my life in happiness.
 
At that time, some of my father's friends were deceived by Kim Il-sung's propaganda and a lot of them ended up heading over to North Korea and ended up dying after undergoing harsh ideological reeducation at coal mines.
 
But the ones who are responsible for ensuring the happiness of my family and myself passed away after sacrificing their lives for their nation. President Syngman Rhee went to the U.S. to study at the age of 30 and earned a living by delivering lectures at churches denouncing Japan’s forced annexation of Korea and by receiving donations from Korean residents. He finally managed to live a stable life after marrying a foreign bride at the age of 56. Even then, he would stay up late into the night writing on his typewriter.
 
He returned to his home country at the age of 70 for the first time in 40 years after Korea gained independence from Japanese colonial domination and lived frugally from 1948 to 1960. And from 1950 to 53, he endured one of the most brutal wars in history as he lived as a refugee. On top of that, he was forced to step down after taking responsibility for illegal electioneering committed by senior officials in his political party who were intent on hanging on to power. He finally passed away alone in Hawaii after battling illness for five years.
 
President Park Chung-hee lived a similar life. Since he was 23, Park walked the path of an elite soldier who was struggling economically. At the age of 44, he spearheaded a revolution and toiled for our country's economic development and prosperity for the next 18 years until he was assassinated by a trusted aide when he was 62. He never took a day off as he planned and oversaw our nation's defense, economic and land development as well as rural renaissance. As a result, one of the world's poorest agrarian countries was transformed into an advanced industrial powerhouse. Moreover, rather than receiving the Nobel Peace Prize or honorary doctoral degree, Park has received criticism from many Koreans as well as critics overseas for being a dictator.

My father (note: novelist Kim Dong - ri) is also like that. He sings better than I do and is also a good runner. He had a far better memory than I do and also had many friends. He had a natural gift for calligraphy and for writing novels and poems. He has received all of the literary awards in Korea. Except for being shorter than me, he was far better at everything, including his personality. Still, he never got to visit the U.S. and did not get a chance to enjoy golf. He did not have a car until the age of 50 and he always wrote down how much he spent and did not buy new clothes. That's how frugal he was.
 
Compared to these people, I really lived better than what my talents had in store for me, much more comfortably than my efforts, and I still live well. I believe that I am living well because somebody sacrificed his or her share and left it for me. In other words, what I have now is a gift from Santa Claus. No matter how I see it, I think Syngman Rhee, Park Chung-hee and my father have left me with a precious gift thanks to their sacrifices. When I offer my respects to my ancestors in the New Year, I must offer a glass of wine for these three men. I have to thank them and tell them that I will never forget the gift they have left me.

Kim Pyung-woo

나는 지금 내가 이렇게 미국에 와서 나이 칠십이 넘도록 골프치고 책보고 글쓰며 사는 것을 다 李承晩(이승만), 朴正熙(박정희) 같은 애국자들이 자기와 가족을 희생해서 열심히 싸우고 일하신 덕분으로 생각한다. 지도자의 이런 자기 희생이 있었기 때문에 국민들이 잘 사는 것이다. 

보라 북한을. 북한은 이승만을 거부하고 그 대신 나이 33세의 게릴라 부대장 아니면 소련군 장교 金日成(김일성)이 건국을 한 나라이다. 김일성은 1948년 36세에 정식으로 집권해서 1994년 82세에 심장마비로 죽을 때까지 46년간 평생 부귀영화를 맘껏 누리다 죽었다. 그 자식, 손자에까지 이어서 3대가 조선 임금도 못 누린 富貴榮華(부귀영화)를 누리고 살았고 지금도 살고 있다. 

이 지구상에서 제일 경치가 아름다운 곳곳에 별장을 두고 세상에서 제일 예쁜 북한 처녀들을 곳곳에서 모아와 기쁨조로 데리고 즐기며 산다. 그 대신 백성들은 대부분 죽을 지경이다. 외국은 脫北(탈북)하기 전엔 구경하기 어렵다. 골프도 구경 못 하고 산다. 아니 쌀밥, 고기 구경도 제대로 못 하고 산다. 겨우 겨우 입에 풀칠하며, 헐벗고, 추위에 떨며 산다. 어디서, 나이 칠십에 책을 보고, 음악을 즐기겠나. 

나는 또 고마운 분이 우리 부모님이다. 1945년부터 1948년 建國期(건국기)에 소련의 赤軍(적군)이 젊은 게릴라 부대장 김일성을 내세워 펼친 온갖 달콤한 선전에 조금도 흔들리지 않으셨다. 처음부터 일관되게, 李 박사같은 애국자는 없어 하시면서 그 분에 대한 믿음을 지키셨다. 이승만 대통령을 믿고 대한민국을 선택하여 돌아가실 때까지 단 한 번도 대한민국을 욕하거나 비난하지 않으셨다. 항상 내 나라가 있어 좋다고 하셨다. 그 덕분에 오늘날 내가 이렇게 행복한 노후를 보낸다. 

그때 아버님 친구분들 중에는 그만 김일성의 달콤한 선전에 속아 넘어가 월북을 하시어 가족들과 생이별은 물론이고 본인도 글 한 줄, 책 한 권 못 써보고 탄광에서 사상개조 교육을 받다 돌아가신 분들이 꽤 있다. 그런데, 나와 가족들에게 이런 행복을 마련해 주신 그분들은 정작 고생만 잔뜩 하시다 돌아가셨다. 

이승만 대통령은 나이 30에 異國(이국) 땅에 단신으로 유학가서 美(미) 전역의 교회를 돌아다니며 강연을 해서 생활비를 마련하고 교민들의 성금을 받아 세계를 돌아 다니며 일본의 횡포와 한국민의 억울한 실정을 세계인들에게 호소하며 사셨다. 그러다, 56세에 서른이 넘은 외국인 여성을 만나 결혼하고서야 겨우 가정을 꾸리고 끼니를 제대로 드시며, 혼자서 외로이 밤새며 타자 치다 잠자리에 드는 고생을 면하셨다. 

나이 70에 해방을 맞아 40년 만에 고국 땅에 돌아와 1948년부터 1960년까지 12년간 돈 하나 없는 가난한 정부를 맡아 난방 하나 제대로 못하시고 사셨다. 거기다, 1950년부터 1953년까지 3년 동안은 세계에서 가장 참혹하고 춥고 힘든 전쟁을 치르면서 나라를 지키려고 잠 한 번 편안히 못 주무시고 피난 생활을 다니셨다. 그것도 모자라 끝내는 李起鵬(이기붕) 등 자유당 간부들이 자기네 권력을 유지하려고 저지른 부정선거의 책임을 지고 물러나 하와이에서 5년간 투병을 하다 외로이 돌아가셨다. 

朴正熙(박정희) 대통령도 마찬가지다. 나이 23세부터 엘리트 군인의 길을 걸으면서 경제적으로 어려운 군인 생활을 하다, 44세에 혁명을 일으켜서 나이 62에 믿었던 부하의 총탄을 맞아 죽을 때까지 18년간 한시도 쉬지 않고 경제개발, 국토개발, 자주 국방, 새마을 운동을 계획하고 지도하였다. 그 결과 세계 最貧(최빈)의 못사는 농업국가를 선진 공업국가로 바꾸었다. 그러고도, 노벨평화상이나 명예 박사학위를 받기는커녕 많은 국민들과 세계인으로부터 長期(장기) 독재자라는 욕만 잔뜩 먹고 가셨다. 

우리 아버님(注: 소설가 金東里 선생)도 그러시다. 나보다 노래도 잘하시고 달리기도 잘하셨다. 기억력도 훨씬 좋으셨고 친구도 많으셨다. 붓글씨와 소설, 詩(시) 쓰기는 천부적이시었다. 나라의 온갖 문학상을 다 받으셨다. 정말 나보다 키가 작으신 것 하나 빼고는 재주와 인품 등 모든 면이 나보다 월등하셨다. 그래도, 미국 여행 한 번 못 하셨고, 골프도 못 즐기셨다. 나이 오십 되시기까지 자가용차가 없으셨고 항상 가계부를 쓰시며 새 옷을 안 사셨다. 그렇게 검약하셨다. 

이런 분들에 비하면, 정말 나는 내 재주보다, 내 노력보다 훨씬 과분하게 편안히 잘 살았고, 지금도 잘 산다. 내가 과분하게 받는 것은 누군가 자기 몫을 못 가지거나 안 가지고 나에게 남겨 주신 까닭이 아니겠나? 다시 말해 산타클로스 할아버지가 나에게 주신 선물이다. 나는 아무리 생각해 보아도 李承晩(이승만), 朴正熙(박정희), 아버님 이 세 분들이 당신들이 받을 몫을 안 받으시고 나에게 선물로 주신 것 같다. 새해에 차례를 지내면 이 세 분께 술 한 잔씩 올리고 명복을 빌어야겠다. 고맙다고. 은혜를 잊지 않겠다고.
