미 국방부는 북한이 계속 미사일을 시험 발사하고 한반도에서 불안정을 야기한다면 군사적 관점에서 적절한 대응을 하기 위한 방안을 찾을 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 북한이 다수의 탄도미사일을 발사한 후 미국이 한국, 일본과 함께 신속하게 군사적 대응을 한 것은 동맹이 강력하다는 신호라고 평가했습니다. 박동정 기자가 전해드립니다.
  
  미 국방부는 북한의 연이은 탄도미사일 발사에 대한 대응과 관련해 “우리는 군사적 관점에서 적절한 대응을 모색할 기회를 찾을 수 있고, 계속 찾을 것”이라고 밝혔습니다.
  
  [커비 대변인]“So we're, we're able to and we'll continue to look for opportunities to look for an appropriate response from a military perspective if it makes sense as they continue to, again, conduct these launches in and continue to provoke insecurity and instability on the peninsula.
  
  존 커비 국방부 대변인은 27일 정례브리핑에서 중국과 러시아로 인해 대북 제재가 효과적으로 작동하지 않는 상황에서 군사적 방법으로 대북 억지력을 강화할 시급성을 느끼고 있느냐는 질문에 이같이 대답했습니다.
  
  커비 대변인은 북한이 이런 발사를 다시 계속하고 한반도에서 불안과 불안정을 계속 유발할 경우를 전제로 이같이 밝혔습니다. 커비 대변인은 지속적인 북한의 탄도미사일 발사에 대한 대응 조처로 한국, 일본과 함께 실시한 양자 훈련을 거론하며 “매우 신속하게 통합돼 진행됐다는 사실을 상기시키고 싶다”고 말했습니다.
  
  [커비 대변인]“I would remind that those two exercises that we conducted with Japan and South Korea in the wake of the most recent launch was that that was that they were in response to the missile launchers, in other words, they were put together and executed very quickly. And that's just that doesn't happen by accident that happens because of good alliance management and prior knowledge and familiarity with one another's military capabilities and the constant training and operating that we do with both our allies. And I think it's remarkable.”
  
  그러면서 “이는 훌륭한 동맹 관리와 다른 나라 군대 능력에 대한 사전 지식, 군사 능력에 대한 익숙함 등 우리가 동맹들과 함께하는 지속적인 훈련과 작전 때문에 이뤄진 것”이라며 “주목한 만한 일”이라고 강조했습니다. 특히 북한의 여러 차례 발사에 대응해 신속하게 조치를 취한 것에 대해 “이는 건강하고 강력하며 생기있는 동맹의 신호”라며 “우리가 인도태평양 지역에서 계속 키우고 향상하려는 동맹과 파트너십 네트워크의 가치에 대한 증거”라고 말했습니다.
  
  [커비 대변인]“By contrast, you know, we were able to act quickly in response to multiple launches by the North just a couple of days ago, to put on the table and get an execution. A couple of exercises. Again, that's a sign of a healthy, strong, vibrant Alliance. And that's the proof in the value of having the network of alliances and partnerships that we continue to try to grow and improve in the Indo Pacific region.”
  
  북한의 탄도미사일 성능과 관련된 질문엔 “우리는 이미 이러한 발사를 비난했었다”며 “북한의 미사일 발사는 도발이고 기존 유엔 안보리 결의를 위반할 뿐만 아니라 한반도 긴장을 고조시킨다”고 지적했습니다.
  
  [커비 대변인]“As I said, and we've already condemned these launches, each one is a provocation. Each one is a violation of existing UN Security Council resolutions. Each one only increases tensions on the peninsula. And each one no matter what kind of missile no matter how far it flew or didn't fly, no matter what the trajectory or the metrics were. Each one we believe is a learning experience for the regime in Pyongyang, and that's concerning.”
  
  아울러 “각각의 발사는 어떤 종류의 미사일이고 얼마나 날아갔는지, 궤도가 어떻게 됐는지 등에 상관없이 북한이 경험을 통해 배우는 것”이라며 “이런 점이 우려스럽다”고 말했습니다. 커비 대변인은 북한이 발사한 미사일에 대한 미국의 평가와 관련해 다수의 탄도미사일을 발사한 것이라고 평가하며, 여전히 검토 중이고 동맹과 계속 협의 중이라고 설명했습니다.
  
  앞서 한국 합동참모본부는 25일 오전 6시와 6시 37분, 그리고 6시 42분 북한 평양 순안 일대에서 동해(일본해)상으로 발사된 탄도미사일 3발을 포착했다고 밝혔습니다. 합동참모본부는 가장 먼저 발사된 건 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM)인 ‘화성-17형’으로 추정했으며, 두 번째와 세 번째 미사일은 북한판 이스칸데르로 불리는 KN-23 단거리 탄도미사일로 분석했습니다.
  
  이와 관련해 커비 대변인은 26일 브리핑에서 북한이 최근 발사한 ICBM에 관해 미국은 한국, 일본과 각자의 정보를 공유하고 있다면서 아직 어떠한 최종적인 결론을 내지 않았다고 말했습니다.
