여의도 불꽃 축제

어제 3년 만에 열린 여의도 불꽃축제에 다녀왔다. 그야말로 인산인해였다. 말로만 듣던 백만 인파의 거대한 군집 속에 실제로 묻혀 본 경험도 처음인 것 같다. (이런 상상을 순간 했다. 이 인파를 광화문 이승만 광장으로 옮길 순 없을까.)

암튼, 코로나 이전에도 매년 이 행사에 참여했었지만, 이번만큼 어마어마한 인파는 처음이었다. 여유롭게 간답시고 오후 4시에 갔는데, 큰 착각이었다. 여의나루역에 도착하면서부터 인파에 밀려 지상 출구에 나오기까지 10분 이상이 걸렸다. 숨이 막힐 지경이었다.

가까스로 출구에 나오니 또 다른 어마어마한 인파가 도로를 메우고 있었다. 외국인들도 상당히 많았다. 설마, 이 정도 일 줄은 몰랐다. 겨우겨우 최대한 강변 주변까지 다다랐지만, 이곳은 이미 정오부터 잔디밭에 돗자리를 먼저 펼친 사람들이 영토권을 주장하는 바람에 언감생신 옆자리에 얼씬도 할 수 없었다.

암튼 여차여차 군중들과 이리 밀리고 저리 밀리다 한자리에 앉고 보니 앞에는 거대한 장애물이 떡 버티고 있었다. 그런 와중에 7시 20분 정각에 한강 상공에 화려한 불꽃이 수를 놓기 시작했고, 백만의 우렁차고 희망찬 환호성이 또 한 번 여의도 한강 변을 흔들어 깨웠다.

강 건너 즐비하게 늘어선 한강의 기적이자 문명의 상징인 고층 아파트와 여의도의 ‘더현대’ 거대빌딩도 우뚝 서서 보란 듯이 환한 불빛으로 밝은 미래의 서울과 한국을 비추고 있었다.

아쉬운 점은 주최 측의 보다 세심하고 철저한 준비만 있었다면, 후진국형 무질서와 음식 찌꺼기, 맥주병과 캔 등 온갖 쓰레기더미를 최소화할 수 있었다는 점이다.

Yesterday, I went to Yeouido Fireworks Festivalwith my wife for the first time in three years. It was a huge crowd. I first realized how big a huge cluster of a million people was. Funny to say, hopefully, I thought how to move this crowd to Syngman Rhee Square in Gwanghwamun on Oct. 10.

Anyway, we had participated in this event every year before COVID-19, but it was the first time that there was a huge crowd like this. We left home at 4 p.m. to go leisurely. It was a big illusion. It took more than 10 minutes from arriving at Yeouido Station to being pushed to the ground exit. Very difficult to breathe.

.

We managed to get out of the exit and found another huge crowd was filling the road. Many foreigners were there, too. We managed to get as close as we could to the riverside. The problem was that people who had already come there since noon had spread their mats on the lawn first.

Anyway, after being pushed back and forth with the crowd, we sat down. Meanwhile, colorful fireworks began to embroider over the Han River at 7:20 sharp. At the same time, the loud and hopeful cheers of 1 million shook the riverside of the Han River in Yeouido once again.

High-rise apartments, a miracle of the Han River and a symbol of civilization, lined up across the river, and the "The Hyundai" giant building in Yeouido also stood out. They stood tall and shone bright lights on Seoul and Korea in the bright future.

What was regrettable was the lack of more precise and thorough preparation by the organizers. Otherwise, we could minimize all kinds of garbage such as backward country disorder, food scraps, beer bottles, and cans.
