미국 정부가 강제징용 문제 해법에 대한 한일 간 합의를 환영한다는 입장을 거듭 밝혔습니다. 양국이 역사적 난제를 슬기롭게 풀었다며, 굳건한 미한일 관계는 북핵 문제를 넘어 역내 과제를 다루는 데 필수라고 강조했습니다. 함지하 기자가 보도합니다.
  
  국무부는 한일 간 강제징용 배상 관련 합의를 “용기 있는” 결정이자 3국 관계의 진전이라며 반겼습니다. 네드 프라이스 국무부 대변인은 6일 정례브리핑에서 “우리는 무엇보다도 우리의 두 동맹인 일본, 한국의 발표를 진심으로 환영했다”며 “이러한 역사 문제는 어렵고 복잡하지만 윤석열 대통령과 기시다 후미오 총리 모두 이런 진전을 이룸으로써 대담한 비전과 용기 있는 리더십을 보여줬다”고 평가했습니다.
  
  [프라이스 대변인]“Well, first and foremost, we've heartily welcomed the announcement between these two allies of ours -Japan and the ROK. These issues of history are difficult, they're complex, they are complicated. But both President Yoon, Prime Minister Kishida have demonstrated bold vision, they have demonstrated courageous leadership by taking this step forward. The United States is an ally to both of these countries. We have a rock solid bilateral relationship with both Japan and the ROK. We have sought from the earliest moments of this administration to deepen and to advance the trilateral relationship.”
  
  이어 “미국은 이들 두 나라 모두의 동맹”이라며 “우리는 일본, 한국 모두와 굳건한 양자 관계를 맺고 있고, (바이든) 행정부 출범 시기부터 3국 관계 심화와 발전을 모색해왔다”고 강조했습니다.
  
  특히 토니 블링컨 국무장관과 웬디 셔먼 국무부 부장관, 성 김 대북특별대표가 각급에서 한국, 일본과 25차례에 걸쳐 3자 접촉을 했으며 조 바이든 대통령도 지도자급에서 이런 관여에 참여했다고 설명했습니다. 그러면서 “우리가 그렇게 한 건 자유롭고 개방적인 인도태평양을 위해 두 나라와 공유하는 비전에 3국 관계가 매우 중요하기 때문”이라고 말했습니다.
  
  [프라이스 대변인]“And we're doing that because the trilateral relationship is critical to a vision we share with both countries for a free and open Indo-Pacific. You can talk about it in terms of specific issues, in terms of the importance of trilateral cooperation on the challenges that are posed by the DPRK, but it's also in some ways broader than that.”
  
  이어 “북한이 제기하는 도전에 대한 3국 협력의 중요성을 언급할 수도 있지만, (3국 협력은) 어떤 면에선 그보다 더 광범위하다”고 평가했습니다. 한일의 이번 발표에 미국이 어떤 역할을 했느냐는 질문에는, “미국은 동맹이자 양국의 파트너 역할을 했다”고 답했습니다.
  
  [프라이스 대변인]“The United States has played the role of ally. The United States played the role of partner to both countries. These are decisions that Japan and the ROK have had to make and will have to make themselves. Of course, we are going to play whatever role we can to be most helpful, as helpful as we can to our treaty allies. And when it comes to the decision that was announced today, it is something that we heartily commit because we welcome the advancement of the bilateral relationship between the ROK and Japan. But it's also critically important to us that the trilateral relationship between Japan between the ROK and the United States is as deep and effective and seamless as it possibly can be, not only for the core challenge that is the DPRK and its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs, but also for the shared vision our three countries have of a free and open in the Pacific region.”
  
  또한 “그건 일본과 한국이 내려야 했던 결정이고 앞으로도 내려야 할 결정”이라며 “물론 우리는 조약 동맹에 가장 도움이 되는 모든 역할을 할 것”이라고 강조했습니다. 이어 “오늘 (한국과 일본의) 발표는 우리가 진심으로 전념하는 것”이라며 “이는 우리가 한일 간 양자 관계 발전을 환영하기 때문”이라고 확인했습니다.
  
  아울러 “일본과 한국, 미국의 3자 관계가 깊고, 효과적이며 원활해야 하는 것이 매우 중요한 건 북한, 그리고 북한 핵무기와 탄도미사일 프로그램이라는 핵심적인 도전뿐 아니라 우리 세 나라가 가진 자유롭고 개방된 인도태평양에 대한 공동 비전 때문”이라고 덧붙였습니다.
  
  한편 프라이스 대변인은 일본이 역사 문제에 대해 정식으로 사과하지 않았다는 한국 일각의 지적에 대해선 “그건 미국이 대답할 질문이 아니다”라고 선을 그었습니다. 그러면서 “그건 우리의 소중한 동맹인 일본과 한국 간 논의 사항이고, 그곳이 이런 질문을 제기하기에 적절한 장”이라고 답했습니다.
