백악관이 12년 만에 열린 한일 정상회담에 환영의 뜻을 나타내고 미한일 3국 관계의 중요성을 강조했습니다. 북한의 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM) 발사를 강력히 규탄하면서 군사력 보강 의지도 밝혔습니다. 조상진 기자가 보도합니다.
  
  백악관이 16일 열린 한일 정상회담에 적극적인 환영과 지지 입장을 밝혔습니다.
  
  [커비 조정관]“You've seen the president Yoon of the Republic of Korea and Prime minister Kishida of Japan meeting in Tokyo for the first summit in 12 years. Having the lead up to the summit, both countries have made a truly historic announcement marking a new chapter of cooperation and partnership between them. President Biden welcomed that 3/6 announcement which was meant to address the historical issues and to improve bilateral ties. And the United States will continue of course to support Japan and ROK as they take steps to translate this new understanding into enduring progress.”
  
  존 커비 백악관 국가안보회의(NSC) 전략소통조정관은 16일 온라인 브리핑에서 “윤석열 한국 대통령과 기시다 후미오 일본 총리가 이날 일본 도쿄에서 12년 만에 정상회담을 가졌다”면서 이같이 밝혔습니다. 이어 “이번 정상회담을 앞두고 양국은 협력과 파트너십의 새로운 장을 여는 참으로 역사적인 발표를 했다”며 한일 관계 개선 의지를 담아 한국 정부가 지난 6일 발표한 ‘강제징용 피해 배상 해법’을 상기시켰습니다.
  
  그러면서 “조 바이든 대통령은 역사 문제를 해결하고 양국 관계를 개선하기 위한 지난 6일 발표를 환영했다”며 “미국은 일본과 한국이 이 새로운 상호 이해를 지속적인 진전으로 전환하기 위한 조치를 취하는 가운데 그들을 계속 지지할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.
  
  커비 조정관은 한일 양자 협력과 미한일 3자 협력의 중요성을 강조하면서 이러한 협력이 역내 안보와 번영에 핵심이라는 점을 분명히 했습니다.
  
  [커비 조정관]“Under President Biden we have worked very hard to strengthen our defense and security alliances bilaterally to advance deterrence and peace across the Indo Pacific. And of course we've supported ROK and Japan as they've worked to increase cooperation between each other, effectively strengthening the US, ROK, Japan trilateral partnership.”
  
  커비 조정관은 “바이든 정부는 인도태평양 전역에서 억지력과 평화 증진을 위한 양자 간 국방 및 안보 동맹 강화를 위해 매우 열심히 노력했다”고 말했습니다. 아울러 “우리는 한국과 일본이 상호 협력을 증진하고 미한일 3자 파트너십을 실질적으로 강화하기 위해 노력하는 것을 지원해 왔다”고 덧붙였습니다.
  
  이어 바이든 대통령이 지난해 6월 북대서양조약기구(NATO· 나토) 정상회의와 11월 캄보디아에서 열린 동아시아정상회의에서 두 차례 미한일 3국 정상회담을 한 것을 언급하면서, 3국 정상이 안보와 경제, 기술 분야를 포함해 긴밀한 관계 구축에 합의한 사실을 상기시켰습니다.
  
  [커비 조정관]“President Biden then also held a trilateral meeting with the Republic of Korea and Japan on the sidelines of the NATO summit in June of 2022. And then in November of that same year the three leaders launched an ambitious trilateral statement in Cambodia at the East Asia Summit, where they resolve to forge closer ties between the three of them not just in the security domain, but well beyond that to include economics, technology and much more. This partnership, we believe is key to upholding and advancing our shared vision for a safer more secure and more prosperous Indo-Pacific.”
  
  그러면서 “우리는 이 파트너십이 더욱 안전하고 번영하는 인도태평양을 위한 우리의 공유된 비전을 옹호하고 발전시키는 핵심이라고 믿는다”고 강조했습니다. 커비 조정관은 또 북한이 15일 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM)을 발사하며 도발을 감행한 데 대해서는 강력한 규탄 입장과 함께 단호한 대응 의지를 밝혔습니다.
  
  [커비 조정관]“Just yesterday, you saw the DPRK continuing again provocative and destabilizing actions by launching another ICBM. We strongly across condemn that launch. And we're going to continue to work closely with the international community and our allies to limit the DPRK ability to advance its unlawful weapons program that threaten regional stability.”
  
  커비 조정관은 “어제 북한이 또다른 ICBM을 발사하며 도발적이고 불안정한 행동들을 또다시 계속하는 것을 보았을 것”이라면서 “우리는 그 발사를 강력히 규탄한다”고 말했습니다. 그러면서 “우리는 역내 안정을 위협하는 불법 무기 프로그램을 진전시키는 북한의 능력을 제한하기 위해 국제사회 및 동맹국들과 계속해서 긴밀히 협력할 것”이라고 밝혔습니다. 또한 “한국과 일본의 방위에 대한 미국의 공약은 절대적으로 굳건하다”면서 미한일 3국 간 관계를 계속 강화할 것이라는 점을 분명히 했습니다.
  
  [커비 조정관]“United States commitments to the defense of the Republic of Korea and to the defense of Japan remain absolutely ironclad. And we're going to continue to strengthen and enhance those trilateral ties between our three nations. I would tell you that we're also going to make sure that we continue to have appropriate military capabilities. We need to defend our national security interests there and around the whole region.”
  
  커비 조정관은 아울러 “우리는 계속 적절한 군사적 능력을 보유할 것”이라며 “우리는 그곳(한일 양국)과 역내 전 지역에서 우리의 국가 안보 이익을 수호해야 한다”고 강조했습니다.
