미국 국무부가 일본 정부의 후쿠시마 원전 오염처리수 방류 결정을 지지한다는 입장을 밝혔습니다.
  
  매튜 밀러 국무부 대변인은 25일 발표한 성명에서 “(2011년) 재해 이후 일본은 후쿠시마 제1원전 부지와 최종 처리수 방출을 책임감 있게 관리하기 위해 인도태평양 내 과학계, 파트너는 물론 국제원자력기구(IAEA)와 적극적으로 협력하며 개방적이고, 투명하게 대응해왔다”고 말했습니다. 그러면서 “이는 일본의 절차가 안전하고 국제적으로 인정되는 원자력 안전 기준에 부합한다는 결론으로 이어졌다”고 덧붙였습니다.
  
  [밀러 대변인]“Since the disaster, Japan has been open and transparent as it has sought to responsibly manage the Fukushima Daiichi site and the eventual release of treated water, proactively coordinating with scientists and partners from across the Indo-Pacific region as well as with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which concluded that Japan’s process is safe and consistent with internationally accepted nuclear safety standards. As Secretary Blinken noted on August 15, the United States is satisfied with Japan’s safe, transparent, and science-based process. We welcome Japan’s continued transparency and engagement with the IAEA as well as with regional stakeholders.”
  
  또한 “토니 블링컨 국무장관이 지난 15일 언급했듯이 미국은 일본의 안전하고 투명하며 과학에 기반한 절차에 만족하고 있다”며 “우리는 일본이 IAEA와 역내 이해 당사자들과 지속적으로 투명성을 유지하고 관여하는 것을 환영한다”고 강조했습니다.
  
  밀러 대변인은 “일본은 2011년 3월 11일, 역대 4번째로 강력한 규모 9.1의 지진과 뒤이은 쓰나미가 도호쿠 지역을 초토화시키는 비극을 겪었다”면서 “약 2만 명이 사망하고 수천 명이 부상을 입었으며 2500명이 실종됐다”고 말했습니다.

Nearly 20,000 people were killed, thousands were injured, and 2,500 went missing. We continue to grieve with the people of Japan who suffered so greatly from this natural disaster and who have shown the world their courage and resilience in recovering.”
  
  그러면서 “우리는 자연재해로 큰 고통을 겪었고, 복구 과정에서 세계에 용기와 복원력을 보여준 일본 국민들과 함께 계속 애도하고 있다”고 밀러 대변인은 덧붙였습니다.
  
  앞서 일본 후쿠시마 원전 운영회사인 도쿄전력은 24일, 이날 오후 1시경부터 해수 이송 펌프를 가동해 제1원자력발전소에서 발생한 오염수 처리수의 해양 방류를 시작한다고 발표했습니다. 일본은 2011년 후쿠시마 원전 사고 당시 녹아내린 원자로 내 핵 연료봉 냉각에 사용된 물 등 오염수를 1천 개의 저장고에 보관하고 제염작업을 해왔으며, 이를 희석해 원전으로부터 약 1km 떨어진 해저에 30~40년에 걸쳐 방류를 진행한다는 방침입니다. VOA 뉴스 함지하입니다.
