미국 백악관은 북한의 수중 핵무기 시험 주장과 관련해 북한이 첨단 군사 능력을 계속 추구하고 있다는 점을 지적했습니다. 국방부는 한국, 일본과의 공조 의지를 재확인했습니다. 안소영 기자가 보도합니다.
  
  존 커비 백악관 국가안보회의 전략소통조정관은 19일 북한의 수중 핵무기 체계 시험 주장과 관련해 “김정은과 그의 정권이 도발을 지속하고 있고 (이를) 계속 추구하고 있다는 점을 분명히 보여준다”고 말했습니다.
  
  [커비 조정관]“I don't have a lot of specific information. We're not in a position where we can validate those claims. We're in touch, obviously, with our South Korean partners to see if whatever information and context they might have about that. So I can't I can't verify the claims by the North that they've actually tested such a weapon. It does, though, underscore the continued provocations by Kim Jong un and his regime in Pyongyang, the continued pursuit. Again, whether this is true or not, there's little doubt that they continue to pursue advanced military capabilities to threaten their neighbors and to threaten the region. And that is why President Biden has taken significant steps to shore up our alliances in the region.”
  
  커비 조정관은 이날 정례브리핑에서 관련 질문에 “우리는 특정한 정보를 많이 갖고 있지 않으며, 그런 주장을 입증할 위치에 있지 않다”고 말했습니다. 그러면서 “한국 파트너들과의 접촉을 통해 관련 정보와 정황이 있는지 알아보고 있다”고 덧붙였습니다.
  
  커비 조정관은 이어 “그것이 사실이든 아니든 그들이 이웃 국가와 역내를 위협하기 위해 첨단 군사 역량을 계속 추구하고 있다는 데는 의문의 여지가 없다”고 강조했습니다. 그러면서 “이 때문에 조 바이든 대통령이 역내 우리의 동맹을 강화하기 위해 중요한 조치를 취한 것”이라며 지난해 8월 캠프 데이비드에서 열린 미한일 정상회의를 언급했습니다.
  
  [커비 조정관]“That is why President Biden has taken significant steps to shore up our alliances in the region. We saw in Camp David a historic agreement between Japan and South Korea to improve trilateral cooperation. A new nuclear consultative group session with South Korea that was announced when President Yoon was here, as well as the addition of U.S. military, particularly intelligence capabilities on and around the peninsula, so that we can get better information about what Kim Jong Un is up to.”
  
  커비 조정관은 “우리는 한국, 일본과 3국 협력을 강화하기 위한 역사적 합의를 봤다”며 “윤석열 한국 대통령이 이곳에 있을 때 발표된 한국과의 핵협의그룹(NCG)의 회의와 한반도 안팎의 미군 정보 역량 추가를 통해 김정은의 움직임에 대한 더 나은 정보를 얻을 수 있게 됐다”고 부연했습니다.
  
  커비 조정관은 또한 김정은 북한 국무위원장이 한국과의 핵전쟁을 언급하는 등 공격적 언사를 이어가는 것과 관련해선 “핵 능력을 포함한 첨단 군사 역량을 계속 추구하는 정권을 책임지는 사람에게서 나온 그런 수사는 심각하게 받아들여야 한다”고 밝혔습니다.

That's why we're doing to try to address that threat. You have to take that seriously.   커비 조정관은 “이 때문에 그 같은 위협을 해결하기 위해 우리가 노력하는 것”이라며 “우리는 이를 심각하게 받아들여야 한다”고 거듭 강조했습니다. 그러면서 김정은 위원장이 첨단 군사 역량을 사들이는 것보다 자국 주민들에게 식량을 제공하는 일에 더 집중해야 한다고 지적했습니다. 한편 미 국방부는 북한이 수중핵무기 시험을 진행했다고 주장한 데 대해 미한일 3국 간 공조를 강조했습니다.

We have been very clear on the threat posed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) military programs, and our commitment to the defense of the ROK, Japan, and our commitment to uphold regional peace and stability. We will continue to work with the both the ROK and Japanese Governments to address the threats posed by the DPRK.”
  
  국방부 대변인은 19일 관련 사안에 대한 VOA의 논평 요청에 “우리는 이 같은 활동을 모니터링하고 있다”며 “우리는 북한의 군사 프로그램이 제기하는 위협과 한국과 일본을 방어하고 역내의 평화와 안정을 유지하려는 우리의 공약에 대해 매우 분명하게 밝혀왔다”고 강조했습니다. 그러면서 “우리는 북한의 위협에 대처하기 위해 한국 및 일본 정부와 계속 협력할 것”이라고 밝혔습니다.
  
  북한은 19일 대외 관영 ‘조선중앙통신’에 공개한 담화를 통해 미한일 해상훈련을 “국가의 안전을 심중히 위협하는 행위”로 규정하며 “국방과학원 수중무기체계연구소가 개발 중인 수중 핵무기 체계 ‘해일-5-23’의 중요 시험을 동해 수역에서 진행했다”고 밝혔습니다. 다만 북한은 이번 시험이 이뤄진 시점과 결과에 대해선 언급하지 않았습니다.
  
  앞서 미국과 한국 해군, 일본 해상자위대는 지난 15일부터 사흘간 제주 남방 공해상에서 미국 핵 추진 항공모함 칼빈슨함 등이 참가한 가운데 북한 핵 위협에 대응한 연합해상훈련을 실시했습니다.
