When Israel's oldest kibbutz, Degania, announced that it was giving up its socialist ideals and going private-members could own homes and earn salaries based on how hard they worked―few other than the kibbutzniks themselves were happy. For many Israelis, Degania was a symbol of rosier days, a Zionist idyll of honest work and camaraderie. But for those who called it home, the kibbutz had become an anachronism as rusty as the battered farm tools on display for tourists. Today, the younger generation of kibbutzniks pines for individualism. Tamara Gal-Sarai gazes out over the kibbutz lawn until her eyes settle on the blue-white shimmer of the Sea of Galilee. "The Israeli press blames us for killing their utopia," she says. "It was as if we'd destroyed a national treasure."

That treasure was Israel's self-image. After independence in 1948, the kibbutzniks were seen as the new breed of Israeli. They discarded Europe's deathly pallor and became bronzed, idealistic pioneers. Degania, which had been founded in 1910 by 12 Jews escaping Russian prosecution, was the ideal. Its members were beset by malaria, cattle thieves and bouts of self-doubt. Yet they greened the stony hills with citrus groves. At night in the communal dining hall they argued passionately over the grand themes of the late 20th century: the individual vs. the group, capitalism vs. socialism, religion. (It wasn't until last year that the kibbutzniks of Degania, ardent Zionists, voted to build a synagogue.)

Only 1.7% of Israelis live on kibbutzim, but their influence pervades life and culture. For years, kibbutzniks were the nation's heroes. Moshe Dayan, Defense Minister during the Six-Day War, was born in Degania, and many military leaders and legislators also emerged from the kibbutzim. The kibbutz was a socialist dream. But Degania's manager, Tzali Koperstein, says, "From the start, it was never equal. It was a fake equality." Some toiled hard in Degania's diamond-cutting tool factory and in the fields; others slacked off. And as Israeli society began to value creativity and free enterprise over socialism, Degania lagged behind.〈 TIME, May 7 2007〉

Degania 사람들은 말라리아와 가축도둑과 발작하는 懷疑(회의)에 휩싸였었다. 그러나 그들은 돌 자갈로 뒤덮인 구릉지를 오렌지나무로 푸르게 만들었다. 밤이 되면 그들은 농장의 공동식당에 모여 20세기 후반의 거대한 주제였던 개인 대 집단, 자본주의 대 사회주의, 종교에 관해서 열정적으로 토론하였다. (열렬한 시온주의자들인 Degania의 kibbutzniks가 유대교회당을 짓기로 표결한 것은 바로 작년이었다.)

이스라엘 사람들 중에서 겨우 1.7%만 키부츠에 살지만 이들의 영향력은 이스라엘 사람들의 생활과 문화에 널리 침투해 있다. 오랜 세월 동안 kibbutzniks는 국민적 영웅이었다. 6일 전쟁 중 이스라엘의 국방장관이었던 Moshe Dayan은 Degania에서 태어 났었고 많은 軍(군) 지도자와 입법자들도 키부츠 출신이었다. 키부츠는 사회주의자들의 꿈이었다. 그러나 Degania의 관리자인 Tzali Koperstein은 “처음부터 결코 평등하지 않았습니다. 그것은 가짜 평등이었습니다.”라고 말한다. 어떤 사람들은 다이아몬드 절삭공구 공장과 밭에서 악착같이 일하였지만 또 다른 사람들은 게으름을 피웠다.

그리고 이스라엘 사람들이 창조성과 사회주의보다는 자유기업을 높이 평가하기 시작하였을 때 Degania는 뒤로 처지게 되었다.

1945년 해방 당시 북한은 남한 보다 2배나 잘 살았다고 한다. 북한은 철강, 비료, 기계, 발전 등 중화학공업이 발달하였고 남한은 농업지대였기 때문이다. 지금은 한국이 북한다 25배나 더 잘 산다. 한국은 산업화에 성공하여 선진부국이 되어 있고 북한은 세계에서 가장 가난한 최빈국으로 전락하여 허덕이고 있다. 왜? 한국은 자유민주주의 나라이고 북한은 사회주의 독재국가이기 때문이다.

역사적으로 살펴보아도 사회주의 정치를 하는 나라는 독재를 하든 말든 하나 같이 선진부국으로 도약하는 데 실패하였다. 북한은 말할 것도 없고 소련이나 중공 같은 사회주의 독재국가는 예외 없이 선진복지 국가로 도약하지 못하였다. 아르헨티나처럼 선진부국으로 올라갔지만 정치적으로 독재는 하지 않더라도 사회주의적 경제정책에 집착하는 나라는 다시 개발도상국으로 전락하여 툭하면 국가부도를 내고 있다.
