As the human beings approached the farm buildings, Snowball launched his first attack. All the pigeons, to the number of thirty-five, flew to and fro over the men's heads and dropped their dung on them from mid-air; and while the men were dealing with this, the geese, who had been hiding behind the hedge, rushed out and pecked viciously at the calves of their legs. However, this was only a light skirmishing manoeuvre, intended to create a little disorder, and the men easily drove the geese off with their sticks. Snowball now launched his second line of attack. Muriel, Benjamin, and all the sheep, with Snowball at the head of them, rushed forward and prodded and butted the men from every side, while Benjamin turned round and lashed at them with his small hoofs. 인간들이 농장건물에 접근할 때에, Snowball은 1차 공격을 시작하였다. 수가 35에 달하는 인간들의 머리 위로 이리저리 날아다니며 공중으로부터 똥을 떨어뜨렸다. 사람들이 이것을 처리하고 있을 동안에 울타리 숲 뒤에 잠복하고 있던 거위들이 튀어나와서 그들의 다리의 장딴지를 맹렬하게 쪼아댔다. 그러나 이것은 하나의 작은 혼돈을 조성하기 위한 가벼운 기동작전에 불과하였고 사람들은 막대기를 이용하여 거위들을 쉽게 퇴치하였다. 이제 Snowball은 제2공격선을 진격시켰다. Snowball을 선두로 하여 Muriel과 Benjamin과 모든 양들이 앞으로 돌진하여 사람들을 찌르고 들이받고 하는 동안에 Benjamin은 빙그르 돌면서 그의 작은 발굽으로 사람들을 맹렬히 공격하였다. 그러나 다시 막대기와 징 박힌 구두를 신은 사람들은 동물들에게는 너무 강하였다. 그래서 갑자기 후퇴하라는 Snowball의 고함소리를 듣고 모든 동물들은 뒤로돌아서 대문을 지나 마당 쪽으로 도주하였다.

*해설:

생존욕망은 삶의 원동력이다. 이것은 인간을 창출하는 자연의 섭리이다. 자연은 또한 욕망의 추구에 한계를 없애버림으로써 인간으로 하여금 충족을 모르게 한다. 그래서 인간은 어떠한 상황에 처하더라도 보다 나은 것을 갈망하게 된다. 달리 말하면 인간은 이상을 꿈꾸는 동물이다. 이상주의자는 현실적으로 실현불가능을 추구하기 쉽다. 이상의 좌절은 분노와 폭력을 수반하게 된다. 대부분의 혁명가들은 분노가 일상이 되는 이상주의자들이다. 그래서 혁명은, 특히 본질적으로 거짓 사상인 공산주의 혁명은 Stalin같은 독재자를 낳기 쉽다. 이것이 공산주의 국가 지도자는 예외 없이 가공할 독재자일 수밖에 없는 것이다. 20세기 3대 살인마들인 Stalin, Hitler, 모택동은 모두 사회주의적 이상주의자들이었다.
