Boxer's split hoof was a long time in healing. They had started the rebuilding of the windmill the day after the victory celebrations were ended. Boxer refused to take even a day off work, and made it a point of honour not to let it be seen that he was in pain. In the evenings he would admit privately to Clover that the hoof troubled him a great deal. Clover treated the hoof with poultices of herbs which she prepared by chewing them, and both she and Benjamin urged Boxer to work less hard. 'A horse's lungs do not last for ever,' she said to him. But Boxer would not listen. He had, he said, only one real ambition left―to see the windmill well under way before he reached the age of retirement.

Meanwhile life was hard. The winter was as cold as the last one had been, and food was even shorter. Once again all rations were reduced except those of the pigs and the dogs. A too-rigid equality in rations, Squealer explained, would have been contrary to the principles of Animalism. In any case he had no difficulty in proving to the other animals that they were not in reality short of food, whatever the appearances might be. For the time being, certainly, it had been found necessary to make a readjustment of rations (Squealer always spoke of it as a 'readjustment', never as a 'reduction'), but in comparison with the days of Jones the improvement was enormous. Reading out the figures in a shrill rapid voice, he proved to them in detail that they had more oats, more hay, more turnips than they had had in Jones's day, that they worked shorter hours, that their drinking water was of better quality, that they lived longer, that a larger proportion of their young ones survived infancy, and that they had more straw in their stalls and suffered less from fleas. The animals believed every word of it. Truth to tell, Jones and all he stood for had almost faded out of their memories. They knew that life nowadays was harsh and bare, that they were often hungry and often cold, and that they were usually working when they were not asleep. But doubtless it had been worse in the old days. They were glad to believe so. Besides, in those days they had been slaves and now they were free, and that made all the difference, as Squealer did not fail to point out.

Boxer의 찢어진 발굽은 회복되는 데 오래 걸렸다. 동물들은 勝戰(승전) 축하식이 끝난 다음 날에 풍차재건공사를 시작하였었다. Boxer는 하루라도 쉬는 것을 거부하였고 그가 아픈 것을 아무도 알지 못하게 하는 것을 명예로 생각하였다. 저녁에는 발굽이 그를 대단히 괴롭힌다고 Clover에게 비밀히 인정하곤 하였다. Clover는 그녀가 입으로 씹어서 만든 약초 찜질 약으로 발굽을 치료하였고 그녀와 Benjamin 둘 다 Boxer에게 일을 덜 하라고 촉구하였다. 그녀는 '말의 폐가 영원히 가지는 않는다'라고 Boxer에게 말하였다. 그러나 Boxer는 결코 듣지 않았다. 그는 오로지 한 가지 소망만 남아 있다고 말하였다. 그가 은퇴할 나이에 도달하기 전에 풍차가 잘 돌아가는 것을 보는 것이라고 하였다.

그동안에 삶이 힘들었다. 겨울은 지난해와 똑같이 추웠고 양식은 더욱 더 부족하였다. 또 다시 돼지와 개를 제외하고 모든 배급량이 감소되었다. 배급량에서 너무 엄격한 평등은 동물주의 원칙에 위배되는 것이라고 Squealer가 설명하였다. 그는 외견상으로는 어떠하더라도 동물들은 실제로는 식량이 부족하지 않다는 것을 다른 동물들에게 증명하는 데에 어떠한 어려움도 없었다. 당분간은 확실히 배급의 재조정이 필요한 것으로 발견되었지만 (Squealer는 항상 그것을 결코 '감소'라고 말하지 않고 '조정'이라고 말하였다.) Jones시대와 비교하면 개선(Squealer가 발표하는)은 엄청난 것이었다. 날카롭고 빠른 목소리로 읽으면서, 그는 그들에게 그들은 Jones 시대보다 더 많은 귀리와 더 많은 건초와 더 많은 순무를 먹고 있고, 더 적은 시간 일을 하고 있고, 그들의 식수는 더 좋은 질이고, 그들은 더 오래 살고, 더 많은 비율의 어린 것들이 유아기를 넘기며 살아남고, 외양간에는 짚이 더 많고 벼룩으로부터 고통을 덜 당하고 있다고 자세하게 증명하였다. 동물들은 그의 말을 모두 믿었다. 진실을 말하자면, Jones와 그가 대표하는 모든 것이 그들의 기억에서 사라져버렸다. 그들은 오늘날 삶이 대단히 힘들고 궁핍하며, 자주 춥고 배가 고프며, 잠을 자지 않을 때는 대체로 일을 한다는 것을 알고 있었다. 그러나 의심할 바 없이 옛날에는 더 나빴었다. 그들은 그렇게 믿는 것이 기뻤다. 뿐만 아니라, 그 시절에는 그들은 노예였고 지금은 자유가 있었다. 이것이, Squealer가 항상 지적하듯이, 완전히 다른 것이었다.

*해설:

자유롭고 부유한 한국의 가슴에 구멍이 뚫리고 있다. 대놓고 국가에 반역하는 위선적 좌파들에게 통치권을 자진해서 가져다 바치고 있는 것이다. 한 번도 아니고 세 번이나 반역 좌파들의 손에 정권을 넣어주는 것이다. 사회주의 악령들이 대놓고 거짓말하고 대놓고 사기를 치고 대놓고 적과 내통하며 대놓고 국가를 파괴하고 있어도 방관하거나 심지어 지지하는 국민들이 너무나 많기 때문이다. 이들이 특별히 사악하거나 위선적이거나 탐욕스러운 것은 아니다. 단지 민주적 절차가 필요로 하는 꼬치꼬치 따지는 것과 면밀한 점검을 할 수 없고 할 뜻도 없기 때문이다. 그래서 그들은 좌파의 선전선동에 넘어가 합리적 판단능력을 상실한 것이다.

더욱 통탄스러운 것은 좌파가 아닌 일반 지식인들조차 좌파들의 反지성적 사기행각에 관용과 침묵으로 대하고 있다는 것이다. 사실을 추구하고 진실을 지켜야 할 의무와 사명이 있는 지식인들이 좌파들의 문명 파괴를 강 건너 불 보듯이 방관하고 있는 것이다. 이것은 Hitler의 독일인들처럼, Stalin의 러시아인들처럼, 모택동의 중국인들처럼 악마와 공범자가 되는 것이다. 문명국 자유한국이 망하고 있다는 불안감을 지울 수가 없다. 그나마 희망이 있다면 지난 70년간 쌓아올린 자유민주주의 문명이 어두움의 세력을 쫓아내는 빛이 될 것이라는 것이다. 우리는 지난 3월 대통령선거와 6월 지방선거에서 그 빛을 보았다.
