By the evening, however, Napoleon appeared to be somewhat better, and the following morning Squealer was able to tell them that he was on the way to recovery. By the evening of that day Napoleon was back at work, and on the next day it was learned that he had instructed Whymper to purchase in Willingdon some booklets on brewing and distilling. A week later Napoleon gave orders that the small paddock beyond the orchard, which it had previously been intended to set aside as a grazing-ground for animals who were past work, was to be ploughed up. It was given out that the pasture was exhausted and needed re-seeding: but it soon became known that Napoleon intended to sow it with barley.

About this time there occurred a strange incident which hardly anyone was able to understand. One night at about twelve o'clock there was a loud crash in the yard, and the animals rushed out of their stalls. It was a moonlit night. At the foot of the end wall of the big barn, where the Seven Commandments were written, there lay a ladder broken in two pieces. Squealer, temporarily stunned, was sprawling beside it, and near at hand there lay a lantern, a paintbrush and an overturned pot of white paint. The dogs immediately made a ring round Squealer, and escorted him back to the farmhouse as soon as he was able to walk. None of the animals could form any idea as to what this meant, except old Benjamin, who nodded his muzzle with a knowing air, and seemed to understand, but would say nothing.

But a few days later Muriel, reading over the Seven Commandments to herself, noticed that there was yet another of them which the animals had remembered wrong. They had thought that the Fifth Commandment was 'No animal shall drink alcohol', but there were two words that they had forgotten. Actually the Commandment read: 'No animal shall drink alcohol to excess.'

그러나 저녁 무렵에 Napoleon은 다소 호전된 것처럼 보였고 그 다음날 아침에 Squealer는 Napoleon이 회복 도중에 있다고 동물들에게 말할 수 있었다. 그날 저녁 무렵에는 Napoleon은 업무에 복귀하였고 그 다음 날 Napoleon이 Whymper에게 Willingdon에 가서 釀造(양조)와 蒸溜(증류) 관련 소책자 몇 권을 구입하라고 지시하였다는 것이 알려지게 되었다. 1주 뒤에 Napoleon은 이전에 근로 연령이 지난 동물들의 草地(초지)로 남겨놓기로 의도했던 과수원 너머에 있는 작은 목장을 갈아엎으라는 명령을 내렸다. 그 목장의 풀은 다 소모되었기 때문에 다시 파종할 필요가 있다고 전달되었다: 그러나 Napoleon은 그 목장에 보리를 파종할 뜻이 있다는 것이 알려지게 되었다.

이때 쯤 거의 누구도 이해할 수 없는 일이 발생하였다. 어느 날 밤 12시경에 마당에 무엇이 떨어지는 큰 소리가 들렸고 그래서 동물들은 외양간 밖으로 달려 나왔다. 달빛이 비치는 밤이었다. 7계명이 쓰여 있는 큰 창고의 끝 쪽 벽 아래에 두 조각으로 부서진 사다리가 놓여 있었다. 잠시 동안 기절하였던 Squealer가 그 옆에서 엉금엉금 기어가고 있었고 가까이 그 옆에는 랜턴 하나와 페인트 붓과 거꾸로 뒤집혀진 페인트 통이 하나 있었다. 개들이 즉시 Squealer를 둘러싸고 그가 걸을 수있게 되자 마자 그를 농가 건물 안으로 호위해서 들어갔다. 늙은 Benjamin 외에는 동물들 중에서 누구도 이것이 무엇을 의미하는지에 대해서 어떤 생각도 형성할 수 없었고 Benjamin은 알고 있다는 태도로 주둥이를 끄덕이고 이해하는 것처럼 보였지만 어떤 말도 하지 않으려고 하였다.

그러나 며칠 후에 Muriel은 7계명을 스스로 읽어주며 동물들이 잘 못 알고 있는 또 하나의 계명이 있다고 지적하였다. 동물들은 그동안 제5계명은 'No animal shall drink alcohol'(어떤 동물도 술을 마시지 말아야 한다.)라고 생각하였었지만 동물들이 망각한 두 단어가 있었다. 실제로 계명은 'No animal shall drink alcohol to excess.'(어떤 동물도 술을 과도하게 마시지 말아야 한다)라고 씌어 있었다.

*해설:

상위소득 부모의 자식들은 대부분 상위소득 계층이 되고 하위소득 부모의 자식들은 대를 이어서 대부분 하위소득 계층에서 탈출할 수가 없다. 미국이든 한국이든 어느 나라에서도 사회적 유동성은 극히 제한적이다. 전체주의 독재국가를 제외한 어느 나라에서도 부잣집 자식은 자라나서 또 부자로 살고 가난한 집 자식은 또 가난한 사람이 된다. 물론 이것은 상대적 개념이다. 나라마다 소득 수준이 다르기 때문이다. 미국의 빈곤층은 아프리카 빈국의 상위층 보다 부유하다. 한국의 하층 계급의 평균 소득은 북한의 상위 계급보다 훨씬 더 많다. 이것은 탈북자들의 생생한 증언에 의해서도 입증된다.

빈부가 대물림하게 되는 가장 중요한 요인은 유전인자라는 것이다. 물론 환경이나 우연도 빈부의 중요한 요인이 될 수도 있지만 빈부의 핵심적인 조건은 타고나는 능력 즉 IQ라고 단정할 수 있겠다. 똑똑하게 태어나면 그렇지 않은 경우보다 상대적으로 더 부유하게 살게 된다는 것이다. 콩 심은 데 콩 나고 팥 심은 데 팥 난다는 속담은 이를 두고 하는 말일 것이다. 유전 인자가 결정적이라는 것이다. 우울한 현상이지만 이것은 사실이다.
