Plot

In the midst of a raging war, a plane evacuating a group of schoolboys from Britain is shot down over a deserted tropical island. Two of the boys, Ralph and Piggy, discover a conch shell on the beach, and Piggy realizes it could be used as a horn to summon the other boys. Once assembled, the boys set about electing a leader and devising a way to be rescued. They choose Ralph as their leader, and Ralph appoints another boy, Jack, to be in charge of the boys who will hunt food for the entire group.

Ralph, Jack, and another boy, Simon, set off on an expedition to explore the island. When they return, Ralph declares that they must light a signal fire to attract the attention of passing ships. The boys succeed in igniting some dead wood by focusing sunlight through the lenses of Piggy’s eyeglasses. However, the boys pay more attention to playing than to monitoring the fire, and the flames quickly engulf the forest. A large swath of dead wood burns out of control, and one of the youngest boys in the group disappears, presumably having burned to death.

격동하는 전쟁 중에 한 무리의 영국 소년들을 피난시키고 있던 비행기가 열대무인도 위에서 격추되었다. 소년들 중 Ralph와 Piggy 두 명은 해변에서 소라(conch) 껍질을 발견하고 그것이 다른 애들을 불러모으는 뿔 고동으로 사용될 수 있을 것이라는 것을 발견한다. 소집되었을 때 소년들은 지도자를 선출하고 구조될 방안을 고안하기 시작한다. 소년들은 Ralph를 지도자로 선출하고 Ralph는 또 다른 소년 Jack을 전체 무리의 식량을 사냥할 소년들을 관리할 책임을 맡긴다.

Ralph와 Jack와 또 한 명의 소년 Simon이 섬을 탐험하기 위하여 탐험대를 조직하여 출발하였다. 그들이 돌아왔을 때 Ralph는 지나가는 배들의 관심을 끌기 위하여 烽火(봉화)를 피워야 한다고 선언한다. 소년들은 Piggy의 안경 렌즈를 이용해서 햇빛을 포집하여 죽은 나무에 점화시키는 데 성공한다. 그러나 소년들은 불을 지켜보는 것 보다는 노는 데에 더 많은 관심을 가지게 되고 그래서 불길이 재빨리 숲을 삼켜버린다. 다량의 죽은 나무들이 통제 불능 상태로 불타게 되어 무리 중에 가장 어린 애가 실종되고 불에 타서 죽은 것으로 추정되었다.

*해설:

William Golding은 1935년 Oxford 대학을 졸업한 후 '4년의 시간을 낭비'한 끝에 교사가 되었지만 곧 이어 제2차 세계대전이 발발하는 바람에 학교를 떠나 해군장교로서 참전해 5년 동안 주로 독일잠수함과 싸웠다. 전쟁은 Golding의 낙관주의적 인간관을 근본적으로 변화시켰다. 전쟁의 경험을 통해서 Golding은 인간성의 내면에 잠복해 있는 惡의 가능성을 확인하게 된 것이다. 그는 종전 후에 학교로 복직해 교사로서 아이들을 가르치면서 아이들의 심성을 철저하게 이해하게 되고 1954년에 아이들을 주인공으로 하는 'Lord of the Flies'(파리 대왕)을 발표, 이 작품으로 노벨문학상까지 수상하게 된다.

Golding은 'Lord of the Flies'에서 성인들의 사회와 완전히 차단된 어린아이들만으로 구성된 사회에서도 惡이 자연발생적으로 생기는 과정을 사실적이면서도 상징적으로 표출해 인간사회의 결함은 정치제도보다는 인간본성의 결함 때문이라는 인상을 독자들의 뇌리에 선명하게 각인시킨다.
